Since joining forces as a professional duo less than three years ago, internationally acclaimed solo pianists Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi - ZOFO duet - have thrilled audiences from Carnegie Hall to Osaka Japan with their dazzling artistry and outside-the-box thematic programming for piano-four-hands.
One of a rare handful of professional ensembles worldwide focusing exclusively on piano duets, ZOFO is rediscovering and energetically performing hidden gems of the traditional one-piano-four-hands repertoire, along with a strong dedication to 20th and emerging 21st century works. As innovators in the genre, ZOFO also performs heart pumping one-piano-four-hands arrangements of famous orchestral pieces, such as Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, exploring the realms in which many composers first experienced their symphonic visions.
Since their first performance together in the fall of 2009, ZOFO has made some remarkable achievements:
- First Place: 2010 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Comp.
- Carnegie Hall concert debut: May, 2010
- Finalists: 2011 Osaka International Chamber Music Comp.
- Recording contract w/Grammy Award winning Sono Luminus
Sono Luminus releases the ZOFO duet - MIND MELD thier first CD that features stunning one-piano-four-hands works by Leonard Bernstein (Candide Overture), Harold Shapero (Sonata for Piano Four Hands), Claude Debussy (Six Epigraphes Antiques) and Igor Stravinsky (The Rite of Spring). Recording took place in August 2011 at the state-of-the-art Skywalker Sound Studios in Marin County California. ZOFO will record their second CD with Sono Luminus MOSH PIT: American Dances for 20 Fingers in September, 2012 with release scheduled for spring of 2013. MOSH PIT includes works by George Gershwin, John Corigliano, Allen Shawn, Samuel Barber, Conlon Nancarrow, Terry Riley and Paul Schoenfield.

Two heads may be greater than one, but ZOFO Duet proves four hands are greater than two in the classical world. What the four hands offer in technique and technicality, the two minds offer in performance and passion; while most modern classical artists only collaborate with other artists, Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi have reinvigorated the classical world by resurrecting the form of the duet: two pianists playing on one piano. ZOFO's first CD Mind Meld features stunning one-piano-four-hands works by Leonard Bernstein, Harold Shapero, Claude Debussy, and Igor Stravinsky.
What makes ZOFO unique to modern audiophiles is their bridging of the past with the present. Unlike solo piano repertoire, the duet repertoire is quite limited; having showcased Gershwin, Debussy, and Stravinsky, the duet is in the beginning stages of modernizing the realm of duet piano. Nakagoshi's bachelor degree in composition will lend itself to creating and arranging new works for the group.
