Mario Grigorov: Bio
Son of a concert pianist and trumpeter, a young Mario Grigorov entered the Sophia Conservatorium in Bulgaria, at the age of five. This began his early training in western classical music establishing a foundation that would find a unique compliment when his family relocated to Teheran, Iran where his father performed in the Shah's Symphony Orchestra. For the next six years, Grigorov had many different unique influences in Teheran, with his traditional training in western classical music, all the while absorbing the rich sounds of the Persian culture around him.
In 1973, Grigorov's family returned to Bulgaria where he would study piano under concert pianist Milena Mollova. Soon after, the family moved to Austria where Grigorov would study composition and orchestration under the composer Thomas Christian David at the Vienna Conservatorium. He would soon move on to the New South Wales Conservatorium in Australia where Grigorov began focusing on jazz piano and orchestration with Don Burrows.
Mario Grigorov best known for conceiving and creating the 1998 classical crossover hit, Aria, with composer Paul Schwartz. In 1992 Grigorov traveled to the United States under the mentorship of film composer, Miles Goodman. His compositions would soon find some impressive outlets and was signed to Warner Brothers by Bob James. The Warner deal led to the release of Rhymes with Orange and the highly acclaimed, half a million seller 'Aria.' The album immediately landed on Billboard's Classical Crossover chart, beating out a Philip Glass soundtrack, a John Williams/Itzhak Perlman collaboration, and even the London Symphony Orchestra's Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope. Writer Douglas Levy declared Aria as "the CD that could save classical music."
Grigorov went on to tour Europe and North America as a concert pianist, while Aria climbed to number four on Billboard's classical Crossover chart.
Mario has scored countless acclaimed movies, among them Oscar winners and festival darlings; most recently, Lee Daniels' Sundance ('09) success, Precious. The film, whose cast members include Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, and Mariah Carey, took home the 'Grand Jury Award' for best feature film and 'Audience Choice Award' at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. At the 1998 Hamptons International Film Festival, Mario was recognized with a 'Best Original Score' award for his work on Leonardo Ricagni's El Chevrole. Another film he composed music for is Taxi to the Dark Side, which won a 2008 Oscar for Best Documentary. Mario Grigorov is also the founder of Siblings Music, a New York City-based composition and production company started in 2005.
