Stan Harrison: Bio
Stan Harrison, born in Philadelphia, raised in New Jersey, long time resident of Manhattan, NY, is a sax player/ composer who has traveled the globe playing and recording with, among others, Serge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duran Duran and They Might Be Giants. He is also the co-founder, along with Steve Elson and Lenny Pickett, of The Borneo Horns, a saxophone trio which performs the music
of Lenny Pickett.
He studied saxophone with Joe Allard, composition with Dennis Sandole, Robert Moevs and Huang Ruo, and orchestration and conducting with Rudolph Palmer.
In addition to arranging horns for artists such as David Bowie and Serge Gainsbourg, Harrison also composed many pieces of music for both television commercials and documentary films. His quirky melodlies, rich harmonic sense and attention to contrapuntal detail were just of the few things which made him in demand as a composer and arranger.
With, "The Optimist", Harrison has released a collection of pieces, both instrumental and vocal, which include world, jazz, classical and even pop influences. In addtion to his sax playing, the vocals of Philip Bailey, Najma Akhtar, Andy Vargas and Phoebe Snow are featured. These pieces, composed and arranged by Harrison, will soon be performed live, in combination with music composed for saxophone and string quartet.
