The Ahn Trio: Bio

"A dominant musical gene has obviously left its imprint on the sisters Ahn," according to the Los Angeles Times. Graduates of Juilliard, the trio is redefining the art and architecture of chamber music. These three brilliant musicians are breathing new life into the standard piano-trio literature by commissioning new works from visionary composers including Kenji Bunch, Maurice Jarre, Nikolai Kapustin, Michael Nyman, Paul Chihara, Ronn Yedidia and Nguyen Le.

Born in Korea, the Ahn Trio now tours the world, performing numerous concerts annually in such places such as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie's Weill Hall, Chicago's Ravinia, Singapore's Victoria Concert Hall, Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall and Seoul Arts Center. Violinist Angella and the twins, pianist Lucia and cellist Maria, capture the intellect, hearts and souls of all
who hear them.

The Trio is hailed as a brilliantly distinguished ensemble gifted with extraordinary powers of communication and an exquisite blend of sound, each of the artists performs with superb technique and contagious excitement. The Washington Post said, "Their technique was impressive, and they balanced unanimity and individuality in a spirit that is at the heart
of chamber music."

In additional to their many concert each season, the Ahn Trio conduct workshops and master classes for children and adults all over the U.S.A, Europe and Asia. Wherever the Ahns perform, they share their innovative spirit and ever-evolving
vision of music.

The Trio's innovative project, Ahn-Plugged, has enabled them to reach out to new audiences here and abroad. This project grew from the Ahn Trio's passionate dedication to the commissioning and performance of works by living composers and has resulted in significant additions to the piano trio's repertoire.

In September 2006 they performed the World Premiere of Nikolai Kapustin Divertissement for Violin, Cello and Piano at the University of Florida Performing Arts, who generously commissioned this exciting new work. In June 2007 they premiered Kenji Bunch's Dance Band (commissioned by Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts) which is a celebration of the inextricable link between music and dance. This suite of five dances travels in time between the Old and New Worlds to explore just a few of these moments. Among other premieres are Kenji Bunch's Concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra and Hardware Concerto. Additional premieres include works by Bunch commissioned by Brolly Arts (Salt Lake City, UT), by Michael Nyman, Maurice Jarre and Darol Anger.

The Ahn Trio have just signed an exclusive recording contract with SONY BMG Masterworks and their debut recording, Lullaby For My Favorite Insomniac, will be released on April 1, 2008. With works by Kenji Bunch, Michael Nyman, Piazzola, David Bowie and Pat Matheny this unique and contemporary disc features acoustic and electronica/ambient music. Their three earlier recordings, Dvorak Piano Trios, Ahn-Plugged and Groovebox, on EMI have
been highly acclaimed.

The Ahn Trio recently performed with the Tata Boys at the Czech Grammy Awards in Prague. Other performances on the Ahn Trio's schedule have included Slovenia, Turkey, two tours in Hawaii, Bermuda, St. Thomas, a month-long tour of Sweden, Korea and others. Future tour plans abroad include Korea, China and Europe. The upcoming season includes performances and residencies at universities, performances with orchestras, many renowned venues across the country and a return to Sweden and many
summer festivals.

Possessing an enviable combination of talent and style, they have long been natural subjects for the international press. They made their magazine premiere very early on, in Time's cover story, "Asian American Whiz Kids." They have gone on to frequent fashion pages of the likes of Vogue and GQ and ads for GAP. The Ahns have graced the cover of Spotlight magazine and are included in Best Friends, a book by the author of the best seller Sisters. The Ahn Trio were included in People Magazine's "Most Beautiful" issue. The only classical musicians of the 50 people selected, this issue highlights the most beautiful and accomplished people of the year according to People Magazine.
