Dave Patten: Bio
Dave Patten's rich, baritone vocals may remind you of band's like Nickelback or The Fray, but his songwriting appeals to listeners of all ages. 'Fly Away,' Patten's second release, following his 'Too Close, Too Far,' in 2006, has a full trio sound lead by acoustic guitars, piano and drums. By using a variety of harmonizing backing vocals which compliment his own deeper lead voice with soft falsettos. 'Fly Away,' is peppered with flamenco-styled acoustic solos and Dwayne Allman-esque electric guitar licks. Add to that, a Bonham-size drum kit and the package
is complete.
Dave says: "After a show, I can't help but reminisce on all the hours of preparation. It's a great feeling to see how it pays off in front of a good live audience. Finishing a record, though, surpasses any emotion I have for a live show. If people aren't feeling just as exhilarated from listening to me on their iPod as they are watching my live show, I feel I've failed as a musician and entertainer." Patten, who also produced Fly Away, had the help of a talented group of musicians with Brian Boyle on piano, Josh Druhan on electric guitar, Chris Baglivo on bass, and John Whitely
on drums.
Patten who originally became interested in music to impress girls ( big surprise ), would jam out every night during the summers of his teen years. Little did he know, he was preparing for a life as a musician. This is when he really understood devotion. When he started, Dave could not play a C scale, but has developed 'an ear that can hear' for chords and melody, and how they work together. Instead of practicing scales, Dave wrote songs, and in addition to guitar, he is also self taught on piano and drums, and despite never having taken guitar lessons, has managed to really pull off a masterpiece with 'Fly Away.' Dave says: "My emotions drive my song writing. When I'm really enveloped in a particular mood or feeling, I like to sit down at the piano and just bang out chords. I literally slam my hands down on the keys. After awhile something always comes together and I have an idea how to get started on the lyrics.
"Fly Away" is a strong follow up to the 2006 issue "Too Close, Too Far." The debut album received excellent reviews, including 15 of 16 from The Compendium.
