Al Andalus

Al-Andalus is an ensemble that, as the name implies, focuses on music inspired by Moorish-ruled Spain during the 8th to 15th centuries when Muslims, Jews & Christians peacefully coexisted side by side in an inspired cultural exchange of the sciences and arts. Tarik & Julia Banzi's Al-Andalus is a graceful and distinctive ensemble sound that straddles continents in its cultural voice and centuries in its array of techniques.

The Al-Andalus ensemble varies in number from 2-7 performers. The core of Al-Andalus is formed by Tarik Banzi (al-Panzi), from Tetuan, Morocco and American born Julia Banzi, they are in themselves a model of integration and cross cultural fertilization. Tarik is from Tetuan, Morocco and grew up immersed in the Andalusian tradition. He is is both a fine artist (Ph.D. abd) and composer/musician who performs on the oud, ney, and darbuka. Julia, from Colorado a musician (flamenco guitar, viola, percussion) & an ethnomusicologist as well as one of a very few female flamenco guitarists worldwide.

Together, the Banzi's vision of Contemporary Andalusian music is rooted in both lived experiences, scholarly analysis and creative synthesis.
