The Detroit Jazz Festival has always celebrated the city's remarkable jazz heritage as a core value. But the 37th annual event, which came to a close Monday evening with a vivacious performance by the Ron Carter Great Big Band at Hart Plaza, felt even more connected to the city's tradition than usual. There are some lessons here.

Carter, 79, the influential Detroit-bred bassist who served as the 2016 artist-in-residence, is only the second hometown hero to have occupied the position. The other is violinist Regina Carter (no relation), who inaugurated the program in 2007. Having Ron Carter as the face of the festival, the cornerstone of its artistic and marketing efforts for the year, and performing once a day at the helm of different ensembles kept reminding audiences in the most powerful way possible that Detroiters live on hallowed ground.
