Ron Carter named Detroit Jazz Fest artist-in-residence / Detroit Free Press

The Detroit-bred bassist Ron Carter, one of the most influential bassists in jazz history - and the most recorded - has enjoyed an increasing presence at the Detroit Jazz Festival in the last two years. In particular, fans who were able to squeeze into the cozy confines of the Pyramid Stage at Hart Plaza last summer are still buzzing about Carter's magical duet performance with guitarist Pat Metheny, the festival's artist-in-residence in 2015. But now Carter's profile at the annual Labor Day weekend festival is about to rise even higher: Carter, 78, has been named Metheny's successor as artist-in-residence for 2016.
