Teodor Currentzis | MusicAeterna - Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro is CBC Music 'First Play'

Teodor Currentzis is a perfectionist to the point of obsession, which isn't such a bad quality for a conductor to have.

The Greek-born conductor and his Russia-based MusicAeterna ensemble have recorded Mozart's entire The Marriage of Figaro opera with an unprecedented attention to detail.

Currentzis carefully controlled every corner of this recording, from finding the perfect acoustic space in a city on the edge of Siberia, to hand-picking his ensemble and soloists, to supervising the entire mixing and editing process. The lanky conductor led his musicians through 14-hour recording sessions for just over a week, sometimes spending an entire rehearsal on perfecting one chord.

The result just might be the most precise Mozart opera recording that's ever been made. Performers include

Teodor Currentzis, conductor
MusicAeterna, ensemble and chorus
Andrei Bondarenko, Count Almaviva
Simone Kermes, Countess Almaviva
Christian Van Horn, Figaro
Fanie Antonelou, Susanna

Stream Currentzis' recording of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro until Feb. 10. The album is available through Amazon beginning Feb. 25.
