HM Queen Elizabeth II: The Commemorative Album is the WFMT: Featured New Release

Bookmark and Share

Decca Records is privileged to announce the release of a brand new album to commemorate in music the life, times and passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The poignant collection, meticulously curated, features music from key moments of the Queen’s life and reign: her wedding, coronation, and jubilees; hymns and anthems heard at national events such as Remembrance Sunday and the Last Night of the Proms; melodies reflecting the close tie between the monarchy and the armed services; and songs and melodies beloved by each country of the Union.

Also included is music heard during the Funeral and Committal Services of HM Queen Elizabeth II, which took place in London on 19th September 2022, as well as three pieces from the preceding Services of Reflection, held in Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff.  Music for royal occasions, celebratory as well as sombre, reflect at its heart a life of dedication and service.

Two world premiere recordings feature. Firstly, a moving new arrangement of ‘Nimrod’ from Edward Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’, set to the words ‘Pie Jesu’ by British composer and arranger, Iain Farrington, and secondly, the first recording of Sir James Macmillan’s ‘Who Shall Separate Us?’ for eight-part choir, commissioned for the state funeral of Her Majesty, and performed here by VOCES8.

Artists include Sir Bryn Terfel, the Band of the Coldstream Guards, the Central Band of the RAF, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Choir of King’s College Cambridge, the Choir of Royal Holloway, The Sixteen, Plymouth Military Wives Choir, Simon Preston, Dame Vera Lynn and rising young British tenor, Freddie De Tommaso.

The striking cover art is based on the portrait of HM The Queen, painted in 1992 by the British artist, Richard Stone. Unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery that year, this portrait is Stone’s most famous work. Commissioned by the burghers of Colchester, the eight foot by five foot canvas hangs today in the town’s Moot Hall and represents three years’ work and some seven sittings with Her Majesty The Queen. It is the perfect image to accompany music that will always vividly evoke fond memories of a uniquely beloved monarch.  Tracks include:
