Sarah Chang takes on 'cool' Shakespeare theme and students with NJSO

Violinist Sarah Chang is used to playing wrenching emotional solos by the likes of Brahms and Tchaikovsky on concert stages.

When she joins the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra this month, however, she's looking forward to playing something not quite "so heavy, so serious." You might say she's excited to "play it cool."

This year, the NJSO's annual Winter Festival takes on a Shakespeare theme for its three weekends of January concerts. For two programs, Chang will perform a violin arrangement of Bernstein's "West Side Story" Suite by David Newman.

"It's just such a pleasure when you get the opportunity to play something as iconic and beautiful as ‘West Side Story,' " she says. "People who aren't musicians, or might not be regular subscribers, will listen to the piece for the first time and will recognize melodies because it's something they grew up with."  READ THE FULL NJ.com ARTICLE
