What happens when an eminent jazz pianist and a virtuoso bluegrass banjoist share a stage?

In the case of Chick Corea and Bela Fleck – musicians whose work really transcends any single genre – the music-making proves as unpredictable as it is guilelessly charming.

For there were no formulas or pretensions as Corea and Fleck partnered before a large and clearly rapt audience Saturday night at the Auditorium Theatre. Though the prospect of a piano and banjo alone engaging listeners' attention in our noisy, high-tech age might have seemed improbable, Corea and Fleck managed the feat elegantly. That they did so at mostly muted volume levels in a purely instrumental music unfolding in an enormous concert hall only underscored the magic of their efforts.
