Jack Gallagher - An American Master / Fanfare Q&A

One of the things I like best about writing for Fanfare is the opportunity to become acquainted with the music of new and worthwhile composers. In a feature such as this, there are often multiple CDs to review, which adds the opportunity to really immerse myself in the music of a composer hitherto unknown to me and to gain a true perspective of his art through the hearing of numerous works. Thus it is with the music of Jack Gallagher, whose fluent and masterful music immediately gained and sustained my attention. Gallagher studied composition with such luminaries as Elie Siegmeister, Robert Palmer, and Burrill Phillips, and participated in masterclasses and seminars with Aaron Copland, George Crumb, and William Bolcom, as well as the recently deceased Karel Husa. Currently the Olive Williams Kettering Professor of Music at The College of Wooster in Ohio, he is a most affable fellow, the sort that once you've corresponded with for a short time, you feel like you've known for years. Thus, I felt privileged to query him via email in January of 2017 regarding his music and general outlook on life.
