When Time for Three was established 14 years ago, the classical establishment's reception was sometimes chilly, because the imaginative, cross-genre ensemble hardly conforms to traditional notions of a string trio. Performing distinctive takes on tunes by everyone from the Beatles to rapper Kanye West as well as their own original material, the group's two violinists and double-bassist look and act more like an indie-rock band. Time for Three, which performs Monday at the City Winery, is part of a fast-growing convergence of classical music, indie-rock, jazz and other styles that some people in the field have labeled alt-classical or indie-classical.
