The O'Connor band. A unique family affair / The San Diego Union-Tribune

Former Bonsall resident Mark O'Connor has been one of the violin world's most acclaimed artists since he was a teenager, thanks to his dazzling instrumental skills and ability to shine whether playing country, jazz, bluegrass or classical. He is, incidentally, one of the few musicians who has won Grammy Awards for both classical and country-music recordings. He is also a former member of Dixie Dregs, a band the fused jazz, rock and country-music like no other.

But O'Connor's winner's new group is unique, even by his standards. It features his wife, Maggie, on violin and vocals; his son, Forrest, 28, on mandolin, guitar and vocals; and Forrest's wife, Kate Lee, 24, on violin and vocals. On tour, they are accompanied by guitarist Joe Smart and bassist Geoff Saunders.

Released this month, "Coming Home," The O'Connor Band's chart-topping debut album on Rounder Records, is an enchanting affair. It offers heartfelt ballads, breakneck instrumentals and lots to savor in between. So far as we know, their concerts do not yet include a high, lonesome version of Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair."

8 p.m. Tuesday. Belly Up Tavern, 143 S. Cedros Ave., Solana Beach.
