Lisa Batiashvili - Bach / WQXR: Album Of the Week

There are many ways to play the music of J.S. Bach on a violin these days, whether using antique fiddles with gut strings and Baroque bows, or big-toned modern equipment. In preparing this collection, Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili says she considered using a Baroque violin or bow but ultimately found the period approach "too extreme."

"We don't really know how people played Bach at that time," she told WQXR in a recent interview. "Also, we know that the technical abilities of musicians these days are so much farther than in the 17th and 18th centuries. So I'm sure that if Bach, Mozart and Beethoven lived today, they wouldn't want us to play things differently from what people are expecting today."
