The Utah Symphony celebrated its 75th anniversary on Thursday at a glitzy gala concert featuring one of the music world's brightest stars, pianist Lang Lang. Music director Thierry Fischer and the orchestra made the most of their time with the superstar, engaging him for not one but two contrasting concertos: Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor and Grieg's Concerto in A Minor.

Is there anyone who appears more at home on the piano bench than Lang Lang? The keyboard seemed like an extension of his arms as he played with effortless lyricism; his fingers were unerringly musical even when they weren't on the keys. At a couple of points, he spread the fingers of his right hand as if flinging the notes out into Abravanel Hall.
