Bela Fleck to perform at CA's Cabrillo Festival / Monterey Herald interview

He's a native New Yorker, named after avant-garde European composers Bela Bartok, Anton Webern and Leos Janacek, so it was probably destiny that he became a famous musician. But Bela Fleck's central inspiration was none of those august Europeans. It was instead Earl Scruggs or rural North Carolina, namely Scruggs's world-famous performance of the theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Since then, of course, with New Grass Revival and later his own band the Flecktones, Fleck has taken the banjo to places where Scruggs, who became a mentor, never figured it would go.
