One last Time for Three with Sun Valley Summer Symphony / Idaho Mountain Express

Bookmark and Share

Time for Three's high-energy compositions include rearrangements of classic rock songs and original tunes that stretch traditional notions of what classical string music sounds like. The trio is ending a three-year residency with Sun Valley Summer Symphony this year. In 2015 and 2016, genre-bending string trio Time for Three debuted original compositions commissioned from them by the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. "Elevation: Paradise," written by the group with Kenji Bunch, debuted in 2015, followed by "Free Souls" in 2016.

Since the composition of "Free Souls," the group's dynamic changed with the addition of violinist and singer Charles Yang. When the trio began composing "Songs for Joy"-the final commissioned piece to be premiered on Aug. 3-the two original members, Nicolas Kendall and Ranaan Meyer, weren't sure what to expect. "We had no idea when Charles came for a barbecue/rehearsal/hang for a couple days in June 2016 that it was going to lead to all that it has," Meyer writes in the symphony's 2017 booklet. "Charles continues to surprise us, challenge us, and push the envelope as far as what Time for Three can create." The trio will perform their new composition at the end of the symphony's Pops Night concert Thursday, Aug. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Pavilion, with Time for Three performing all night.
