A year on from winning the International Chopin Piano Competition Seong-Jin Cho from South Korea continues to play to his strengths. In Chopin's glittering and lyrical Piano Concerto No. 1, the E Minor, he blends poetry with a stream of limpid, sparking fingerwork that is never overblown or showy, and is supported by a keenly played accompaniment from the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda. The four Ballades are quite different. Here we have playing fit for the intimacy of the salon. At times, the music seems to linger on the borders of a dream world.
