Last month, Angelique Kidjo won her fourth Grammy in the 'Best World Music' category. But it wasn't quite like every other year she had been nominated for the award. This time she shared the nomination with fellow African act Burna Boy, the first artist of the continent's current afropop scene to earn a nomination. While there's no question that Kidjo, who won for her 2019 album Celia, was beyond deserving (this was by no means a Kendrick-Macklemore scenario), Kidjo made the conscious decision to dedicate her award to Burna and urged viewers to pay attention to the wealth of new talent coming from the continent. "The new generation of artists coming from Africa are going to take you by storm and the time has come," said the artist.
'Take Africa Out of It and There's No Music for Y'all,' OkayAfrica caught up with the legendary Beninese singer following her recent Grammy win and her feature on the collaborative electronic track 'Milambi.'

SoulTrackers responded big time last year when we debuted the song "Leaving LA" by the New York-based collective, Snack Cat. Mixing elements of Yacht Rock with 80s R&B – and even a touch of jazz, the band consistently delivers high infectious pop/soul with strong instrumentation. They've become "go to" musicians for many of the soul and rock artists in the region, and are popular at music festivals.
The band's newest single, "Young Love," comes out today, and it is another tasty slice of accessible – though deceptively complex - music. The song was born on an L.A. rooftop, where guitarist and bandleader Aleksi Glick was ruminating on his first serious relationship back in college, and all of the passionate twists and turns it took.
The band deftly handles the number, and hands us another winner we're enjoying. For (February 21, 2020) 'Young Love' is the SOUL TRACKS: First Listen

She is the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's artist in residence, the latest in a succession of supremely talented musicians to have held that post, including Sunwook Kim, Johannes Moser and Nemanja Radulovic. In a move that signals that she is different, Gabriela Montero began her tenure with an impromptu piano performance on Bournemouth Pier last October. The term ends on February 26 with a recital with the BSO principals at the Lighthouse.
The other dimension to her being different is her unique improvisational gift. It has given her a devoted following around the world. She can take any melody and just run with it, as many audiences have discovered. Montero is a fascinating and intriguing interviewee even from three thousand miles away. Our conversation ranged from power and politics, to human rights, the state of her native Venezuela and music as a force for good. Picture:Shelley Mosman

It has been 12 years since I picked up the album Gently Weeps album by the Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, largely to see what he did with the George Harrison title track. You can make up your own mind on that here, but for me that was all the impetus I needed when this album (with bassist Nolan Verner and guitarist Dave Preston) turned up.
Let's just say Shimabukuro is unlike any other ukulele player you will ever have heard. In fact you'd probably be surprised to learn that it is ukulele at all on most of these tracks where he brings out a lute-like quality (Lament with Pink Floyd-like atmospherics), something akin to an acoustic guitar (the more MOR Summer Rain) and on the furious hard rock opener When the Masks Come Down with Preston off the leash and the gritty, fist-tight tension of Twelve this is to ukulele what Rodrigo y Gabriela are to flamenco.

Not every book or movie can be successfully transformed into a play or musical.Broadway actress Heidi Blickenstaff says it works for Freaky Friday "because there is magic involved, it is inherently theatrical. Because there is a fantastical element to the story - this wildly unusual body swap - it lends itself to being theatrical." Alley Theatre plays host as the national tour comes to Houston next week with the story of a mother and daughter who swap bodies for 24 hours. The Disney musical was preceded by two popular movies (1976 and 2003), whose story and inspiration came from a widely read 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers.
In 1943, Decca Broadway released the first-ever cast album of all time. The musical was Rodgers and Hammerstein's groundbreaking Oklahoma!. Fast forward 76 years, the newly-relaunched Decca Broadway, part of Verve Label Group, announces the release of the new cast recording for the revival of Oklahoma!
The 2019 revival of Oklahoma! is making history as the first time the Rodgers and Hammerstein estate has allowed new arrangements of the original score. The New York Times said of these new versions, "The well-known melodies have been reimagined – by the brilliant orchestrator and arranger Daniel Kluger – with the vernacular throb and straightforwardness of country and western ballads." Daniel Fish's reimagined revival of Oklahoma! officially opened April 7 at Circle in the Square Theatre. The cast is led by Rebecca Naomi Jones as Laurey and Damon Daunno as Curly and the cast album will be produced by Dean Sharenow and Daniel Kluger.

The new comedy musical Tootsie, adapted from the 1982 film, began previews on Broadway March 29, following an acclaimed out-of-town tryout in Chicago last fall. Tootsie officially opens at the Marquis Theatre April 23. Tony nominee Santino Fontana leads the cast as Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime – as the star of a new Broadway musical.
TOOTSIE features an original score by Tony Award-winner DAVID YAZBEK (The Band's Visit, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), a book by ROBERT HORN (13; Dame Edna, Back with a Vengeance), choreography by Tony Award nominee DENIS JONES (Holiday Inn, Honeymoon in Vegas), and musical direction by ANDREA GRODY (The Band's Visit).
