When Detroit-based violinist Regina Carter set out on her latest musical venture, Southern Comfort, she didn't know very much about her father's side of the family. She knew her paternal grandfather was a coal miner and that he lived in Alabama and with that, Carter set out on a journey of both self and musical discovery. She researched her ancestry and gleaned a sense of life and the traditions of the time through its music.

"I thought while I'm digging and doing this it would be interesting to check out the music that was going on while my grandfather was alive and the types of music that was happening in the different places that he lived and worked," Carter says. READ THE FULL Rhythms Magazine REVIEW.
