Can a performance change your life? Yes. For me, I can think of several times One of the latest was a 2007 recording a friend lent me, "J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations," by New York pianist Simone Dinnerstein. As I listened, I became aware of an immense power of calm, stillness and elevation above the fray. I grew in awareness of peace and the abandonment of self. Sounds mystical, I know, but I guess that's part of what great music, perhaps especially Bach's music, is about. Only a few performers have had that effect on me - another life-changer, in fact, was Richard Goode's performance of Beethoven's Opus 111, but that's for another time. Of course, a transcendent, momentary high is one thing, while a life-changing experience is another. How did this move me forward? First, I rushed out and bought the album myself so I can listen to it again at will. Second, it changed how I approached my own music-making. I started hearing new ways in which I could express feelings in my music, trying to do more of what she does so naturally. And finally, it pushed me further in my quest to bring music into the lives of more people in the Walla Walla Valley.

Simone Dinnerstein will perform at Foundry Vineyards on May 13.       READ THE FULL Walla Walla Union-Bulletin ARTICLE
