George Winston tries daily to get better at playing piano. After 40 years of performing, the pianist says, there is still much to learn. "I'm always trying to get my shows better all the time," he says during a recent phone interview. "Sometimes I take a step back and realize how lucky I am to still be performing after all these years." The legendary pianist will make his Silver City debut on Tuesday, Feb. 7. And he's truly excited about it. "There aren't many places that I haven't played at this point in my career," he says. "I've always enjoyed New Mexico and its energy. I'm looking forward to getting out there for the first time." In the meantime, Winston is patiently waiting for March 31. That's when his next album, "Spring Carousel," will be released. It is a cancer research benefit album and features a collection of 15 solo piano compositions written by Winston while he was in recovery from a bone marrow transplant for myelodysplastic syndrome at City of Hope, in Duarte, Calif.
