Angele Dubeau w/La Pieta - Elle makes 90.1WRTI 'Don't miss these 12 classical albums from the first half of 2022'

On February 11 2022, violinist Angèle Dubeau released ELLE, a new album that magnificently marks the 25 years of existence of her orchestra La Pietà. This 46th album resonates with the feminine sensitivity and virtuosity specific to Angèle Dubeau and the ensemble she founded in 1997, which has ever since demonstrated its artistic excellence and audacity.

ELLE transports listeners to a mesmerizing universe, that is alternately powerful and delicate, touching and ethereal. It features curated pieces by female composers from both here and abroad. François Vallières and Angèle Dubeau are responsible for the arrangements and orchestrations of most of the album recorded at the Église St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil. Carl Talbot is the producer.

Dubeau says……“How should I celebrate the 25th anniversary of La Pietà? The answer came naturally to me: through music. An album entirely conceived, composed and played by women—ELLE, in the singular, because each woman is unique.

Curious, I began listening to works by female composers, selecting without any barriers, open to discovery, guided by my instinct and my pleasure

Initially, there was the joy of developing this magnificent repertoire, then imagining the arrangements. The privilege also to exchange with several of the composers united on the album. Beautiful moments with Elena whom I knew from having already played her works, but with whom I had never spoken. I now have the impression of having known her for a long time. Ana, Julie and Katia, all three from the same city as me; Rebecca whose music I discovered two years ago and who impresses me even more now. From the same generation, Caroline and Isobel who are some of my de- lightful discoveries of the past few years; then Lera, Dalal, Jocelyn and Rachel whose music particularly touches me.

My approach was oriented towards contem- porary female composers, but I also wanted to take a little trip back in time to Hildegard von Bingen, an important 12th century visionary whose writings and scores have survived to this day.

I also made a dream I’ve had for over 10 years of creating a poignant exchange between Inuit throat singing and my violin come true.

WRTI's John T.K. Scherch….It's already been a great year for new classical recordings—here are 12 of them from the first half, among many others, that you won't want to miss.

Elle (Analekta) includes works by Elena Kats-Chernin, Dalal, Rachel Portman, Jocelyn Pook, Rebecca Dale, Katia Makdissi-Warren, Hildegard von Bingen, Lera Auerbach, Caroline Shaw, Isobel Waller-Bridge, Julie Thériault, Ana Sokolovic

You might have heard me talk about Angèle Dubeau and La Pietá on air—I think of them as an ensemble that is very good at presenting music of the 21st century in an accessible context—violin and chamber orchestra. The all-women ensemble celebrated their 25th anniversary this year, and they celebrated with a recording of a wide variety of interesting works, spanning a whole nine centuries (thanks to Hildegard von Bingen mostly, but still).
