Imani Winds' 'The Classical Underground' features music that has never been recorded by a woodwind quintet

Imani Winds is very excited and proud to present our sophomore CD, released on the Koch International Classics label, The Classical Underground. Following the award winning, Umoja, this entire new disc features music that has never been recorded by a woodwind quintet, which alone is a ground-breaking feat! The music of our in house composers, Jeff Scott and Valerie Coleman, are quickly becoming staples of the Imani Winds repertoire, and therefore were ripe for recording.

Highlights of The Classical Underground are Coleman's Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet and her arrangement of the traditional spiritual, Steal Away. Also featured is Scott's original composition,Homage to Duke, a piece that celebrates the sacred music of Duke Ellington and an arrangement of the masterpiece of Astor Piazzolla, Libertango.

Also the listener will hear the entire seven movement work of the legendary artist, Paquito D'Rivera,Aires Tropicales, that has an extra special Jeff Scott arrangement of the last movement that features voice and percussion!! To round out the disc, we recorded the great Lalo Schifrin's La Nouvelle Orleans.
