Johann Johannsson on composing for Blade Runner 2049 & Arrival / iNews

Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has a diverse portfolio. His music has soundtracked the war on drugs in Mexico, the early life of Stephen Hawking and, most recently, a mysterious alien invasion. This versatility perhaps derives from his "schizophrenic" music taste: "It goes from black metal to early electronic music from the 1950s." Next up for the composer – who is currently preparing for a tour that will see him play the Barbican Centre in London on December 9 – is the hugely anticipated Blade Runner 2049. This will be the fourth time that Jóhannsson, a Golden Globe winner and two-time Oscar nominee, has worked with director Denis Villeneuve – following Prisoners, Sicario and Arrival. The Berlin-based musician talked to i about working with Villeneuve on the set of Arrival and Sicario, and his secretive preparation for the new Blade Runner film.
