The Bad Plus performed Ornette Coleman's dense, empathetic and noisy 1971 album "Science Fiction" on Thursday at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. They played every track, in a different order, as well as a couple extras from the same studio sessions and with three added musicians, turning their trio into a sextet.

A band covering an entire album in its own way can be either a new trick or an old one - stunting, or repertory. It seemed to me that the concertgoers on Thursday had a satisfied look even before the music started. What were they satisfied by? Both by the concert's idea, I would guess - covering a deep and strange record as opposed to a more legible and canonical one - and the possibility for transcending the idea.
