A former "American Idol" contestant, Kat Edmonson has released two previous albums. Hefty portions of each were devoted to quirky cover versions of songs, from the standards to hits by the Cure or the Cardigans. For her major label debut, The Big Picture, Edmonson penned more of the material herself, showing an equally rare flair for songwriting. In "Rainy Day Woman," Edmonson enters the blowsy, R&B realm of Amy Winehouse; "Crying" sounds like something by Madeleine Peyroux, a singer who shares Edmonson's elastic phrasing. But the best songs tap '60s lounge-pop. "Avion" recalls the hits Tony Hatch penned for Petula Clark. Edmonson ties it all together with a gamine's sense of pluck.
