There was a great moment that came right at the very end of jazz trio The Bad Plus' concert at the RNCM. For the benefit, perhaps, of those who were just a little taxed by the mental exertions of the past hour and a half, their encore was a 'cover' of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Over drummer Dave King's skittering, funky beat, they sliced open Kurt Cobain's masterpiece with the precision of surgeons and the brio of true masters. It's the ability of the piano trio to unpick tunes under a musical microscope that makes the format so endlessly fascinating. In the case of the Bad Plus, you might hesitate to use the phrase 'piano' trio given their obvious tendency towards the democratic equilibrium of collective improvisation.
