The music of Beethoven and Dvořák frame works by Gyorgy Ligeti and George Enescu - two composers very familiar to The Philadelphia Orchestra's Conductor-in-Residence, Cristian Macelaru on WRTI's Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert re-broadcast this Sunday, October 18th at 1 pm. Ligeti's Romanian Concerto was inspired by Bela Bartók's research into Romanian folk tunes, as well as Ligeti's own exposure as a child to Romanian folk music. Ligeti grew up in Hungarian-speaking Transylvania (in what is now Romania), and Romanian folk music fascinated him, with its unusual scales, tunings, and other distinctive features.

Just before intermission, we'll hear Beethoven's Symphony No. 1. And then superstar Sarah Chang is soloist in Dvorak's Violin Concerto.

During intermission, WRTI's Susan Lewis and Ross Amico speak backstage with Sarah Chang and Maestro Macelaru. That's Sunday, October 18th from 1 to 3 pm. Gregg Whiteside is producer and host. LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT

The program concludes with the ever-popular Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 by George Enescu.
