Simone Dinnerstein: Broadway - Lafayette / WQXR: Album Of the Week

Simone Dinnerstein, a Brooklyn-based pianist who has won praise for her Bach performances over the past decade or so, has set out to show a broader range of her talents with her new recording, "Broadway-Lafayette" (a Photoshopped image of that very F train station appears on the cover). At the center of the album is an unusual new concerto by Philip Lasser, a New York composer with ties to France, called The Circle and the Child. The expertly constructed piece is steeped in a conservative language that is reminiscent of Hollywood rom-com soundtracks as much as the sparklier moments in Ravel and Gershwin. The album's bookends are jazzy works from the 1920s: Ravel's Piano Concerto in G and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Dinnerstein is most in her element in the lusher moments of both scores, and she's backed sensitively by the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kristjan Järvi.
