Banjo superstar Bela Fleck will perform at Jazz Fest on April 26 2015 with his wife and duet partner Abigail Washburn. But New Orleans fans can preview his talents at three concerts, starting Thursday (Jan. 8). Fleck will appear as a soloist, playing an original concerto with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

The 15-time Grammy winner will performs his own "Imposter Concerto" with the LPO - a work he premiered in 2011 with the Nashville Symphony and has performed more than 30 times in the ensuing years.

His New Orleans collaborators are accustomed to disparate repertoire. The LPO has played charts behind Allen Toussaint; commissioned work from trumpeter Terence Blanchard (and performed with him at Jazz Fest); and, on Jan. 17, will host a return performance by singer-songwriter Randy Newman. Under maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto, the LPO has emerged as a pioneering, nationally noted force for new music.

Fleck knows all about that - and the pleasures of working with symphonic musicians. READ THE recent interview with NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, as Fleck talks about the joys of composing for orchestra.
