Bookmark and Share

Welcome to Crossover Media's June New Releases. Well, June is busting out all over and Max Horowitz, Amanda Bloom and Zach Swanson discuss some great recordings that Crossover Media is working this month.

We start with a title which we talked about a little last month but did not review, the new IMPULSE! RECORDS album from Sons of Kemet……..'Black to the Future.'

Of course, Sons of Kemet is one of Saxophonist, composer, philosopher and writer Shabaka Hutchings brainchildren…..The Mercury Prize nominated band returns with their fourth LP and second on Impulse! And This may be their most dynamic project yet.

We've been working a lot of Native American projects of late, finishing up Joy Harjo's 'I Pray For My Enemies' and our new Chickasaw inspired project from composer; Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate is called; 'Lowak Shoppala or 'Fire & Light.' This Azica Records recording expresses Chickasaw identity through classical music and theatre and features the Chickasaw Nation Children's Chorus and Nashville String. The piece sung in Chickasaw also includes narration and vocal soloists, and each scene of the story depicts a part of Chickasaw culture and history.

One of our new ECM recordings 'Trickster Orchestra' from singer Cymin Samawatie and percussionist Ketan Bhatti has the Berlin-based group using their poetic musical language on a large scale with the Trickster Orchestra blending ancient and modern Farsi, Hebrew, Turkish, and Arabic texts.

Simone Dinnerstein is back, this time recording Richard Danielpour's 'An American Mosaic' Released by Supertrain Records approximately one year after the first COVID-19 shutdowns in the U.S., the piece is a set of fifteen miniatures, each commemorating a segment of the American population that has been affected by the pandemic - doctors, parents, children, front line workers, caretakers, and those who have lost their lives to the virus. This promotion was divided into two parts and we're now working with the composer Richard Danielpour.

We're working the new Decca Records debut from Argentinian duo and sensation; Cande y Paulo. With over 12 million YouTube views, the duo have reimagined Brazilian singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante's bolero, best known as the theme to Netflix's international hit series, Narcos.

And we finish with another ECM title called 'Bayou' from drummer Thomas Strønen and pianist Ayumi Tanaka. This is a delicate recording, lots of space,

OK, that will do it for Crossover Media's June New Releases. Thanks for listening.
