Cecilia String Quartet takes on Janacek & Ryan@Chamberfest / Ottawa Citizen

When Beethoven wrote his Violin Sonata no. 9 and dedicated it to Rudolph Kreutzer, little did he suspect what posterity would do with it. Tolstoy wrote a novella called The Kreutzer Sonata in which he denounced music, carnal love and marriage as gates to depravity and murder. The protagonist is the kind of misogynist and psychopath that modern cop shows delight in.

Two composers, Leos Janacek (1854-1928) and Jeffrey Ryan (b. 1962) have written string quartets inspired by the novella, and both were presented by the Cecilia String Quartet Monday afternoon at the National Gallery.
