You could call Dom Flemons living history, except he's always been a lot less stuffy and more fun than a description like that implies. With his old group Carolina Chocolate Drops and in his solo incarnation as the self-proclaimed "American Songster," Flemons brings a couple of centuries worth of musical knowledge to his stage show, which melds originals and vintage covers from a staggeringly wide array of folk, jazz, country, blues and Tin Pan Alley styles. All that, and he is one heck of a sharp dresser. Flemons will play at Durham's American Tobacco complex on Thursday, the final show of this summer's WUNC Back Porch Music on the Lawn series. Also on the bill are South Carolina Broadcasters. Showtime is 6 p.m. and it's free.

Flemons released his third solo album 'Prospect Hill' on Music Maker Relief Foundation. 'Prospect Hill' finds Flemons digging deeply into ragtime, Piedmont blues, spirituals, southern folk music, string band music, jug band music, fife and drum music, and ballads idioms with showmanship and humor, reintrepreting the music to suite 21st century audiences.
