Dom Flemons is a name that might not be familiar to many casual Americana fans, but it's a fair bet that his look, his voice, and his sound very likely are. With his signature braces, pork pie hat, and oversized banjo, Flemons was the most visually distinctive of the three founding members of Grammy winning black string band revivalists Carolina Chocolate Drops. But when Flemons left the band in 2013, he did so to expand his musical horizons, something he did on 2014's "Prospect Hill". Now Flemons is coming back to Nashville and the Americana Music Festival he so often frequented with his former band for a solo set on Sept. 18 at The Station Inn. We spoke by phone with Flemons today for a wide-ranging interview two-part interview. Part one talks about playing the Americana Music Festival, crossing a venue off his bucket list, and his solo material's differences from the Carolina Chocolate Drops.
