Englaboorn & Variations

Fresh perspectives unveiled on poignant reissue of the late Jóhann Jóhannsson's debut album, set for release by Deutsche Grammophon in remastered form with additional album of ‘reworkings'

During the weeks before his untimely passing on February 9, award-winning Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson was closely involved in preparations for the reissue of his debut album, Englabörn. Originally released in 2002, the record had been especially remastered, and a second disc containing reworkings of a number of its tracks had also been assembled. Some were by Jóhannsson himself – including a piano version of the title track, performed by fellow Deutsche Grammophon artist Víkingur Ólafsson – while others involved included Ryuichi Sakamoto, A Winged Victory for the Sullen and Hildur Guðnadóttir. Following discussions with his family, the release of Englabörn & Variations will go ahead on March 23, 2018.

Hopes and Dreams - The Lullaby Project

History was written in 2000 BC, and 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Brahms' Lullaby, so this precious musical tradition has deep cultural and emotional roots. These personal songs bring people together, span generations, and tell stories about where we come from, who we are now, and our hopes for the future. The legacy continues with the release of Hopes and Dreams: The Lullaby Project on Decca Gold (Verve Label Group). The recording is inspired by the Lullaby Project, a program of Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute which pairs pregnant women, new mothers, and family members with professional artists to write and sing personal lullabies for their babies, supporting maternal health, aiding child development, and strengthening the bond between parent and child. Hopes and Dreams: The Lullaby Project features fifteen lullabies written by parents from across New York City, as performed by Fiona Apple, the Brentano String Quartet, Lawrence Brownlee, Rosanne Cash, Joyce DiDonato, Janice Freeman (The Voice 2017), Rhiannon Giddens (Nashville), Angélique Kidjo, Patti LuPone, Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs), Dianne Reeves, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Pretty Yende, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Bill Frisell:

Music IS

Almost every day, Bill Frisell gets up in the morning, has some coffee, and writes music. At this point, there are piles and piles and piles of single pages of staff paper filled with his graceful script. "I don't know where the melodies come from," says Frisell. "I try not to judge anything and just let them be." Frisell's mantra, or motto so to speak, is, "Music is good" – a statement said to him by his dear friend and great banjo player Danny Barnes. "That is something that I can say is always true. It's so perfect. Everything I need to know is that phrase, ‘Music is Good.' I almost called the album that, but then I thought that might be too literal. It's good to leave it open."

Mark Abel:

Time and Distance

The California-based composer Mark Abel, who "employs a colorful blend of styles that serve the emotional nature of each work to bracing and poignant effect" (Donald Rosenberg, Gramophone, August 2016) has released a new recording-his fourth in recent years-entitled Time and Distance on the Delos label.

Drawing on a variegated lifetime of artistic, journalistic, political, and poetic endeavors, Mr. Abel has composed five art songs for voice and piano, three of which are based on his own texts, one on a poem by Kate Gale, and one composed to five poems by Joanne Regenhardt. Time and Distance features performances by Grammy Award-winning soprano Hila Plitman; mezzo-sorpano Janelle DeStefano, pianist Tali Tadmor, pianist Carol Rosenberger, Bruce Carver on percussion, and Mr. Abel at the organ.

Weaving Greek mythology and contemporary socio-political themes together, "Time and Distance offers a fresh perspective on the challenge of writing art song relevant to the present era," writes musical polymath Mark Abel. The ensemble of pieces on this recording acknowledges an "ever-shifting, elusive" future, which nevertheless ends on a positive note in the hope that young people with open hearts must point the way.

How Great Thou Art

"Having recently returned to Bulembu for the fourth time and witnessing the grace of God working in this community, we were inspired to release this powerful song. Great work is being done all over the world and it's important to give thanks. Bulembu is just one example of the sort of transformation that can take place through love and compassion. It's been our privilege to watch these orphans grow from babies to children and from children to young adults. We continue to be inspired and amazed by the commitment from people all over the world coming together to support this community. How Great Thou Art - indeed." ~ The Tenors

Kian Soltani:

A protegé of Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Barenboim, 25-year-old cellist Kian Soltani releases his debut DG album performed with pianist Aaron Pilsan, Home. Reflecting his Austrian and Persian roots, Home features Schubert's Sonata in A Minor (Arpeggione) and Schumann's "Du bist wie eine Blume," as well as world premiere recordings of Iranian composer Reza Vali's Seven Persian Folk Songs, written for Soltani, and the young cellist's own composition, Persian Fire Dance.

OSM Chamber Soloists:

Beethoven, Strauss

Under the artistic direction of Andrew Wan, principal violist of the OSM, this album highlights the great musical qualities of the musicians of the OSM in reduced formation: Andrew Wan on violin, Neal Gripp on viola, Brian Manker on cello, Ali Yazdanfar on bass, Todd Cope on clarinet, Stéphane Lévesque on bassoon and John Zirbel on horn.

The Septuor in E flat major, op. 20, by Ludwig van Beethoven and Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders !, arrangement by Franz Hasenöhrl of the symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegel, op. 28, by Richard Strauss allows us to appreciate the mix of timbres of three important orchestral groups of the orchestra: strings, woodwinds and brass. After the Septuor, where the musical texture remains finely chiseled thanks to the variety of timbres, we marvel at Hasenöhrl's ingeniousness to suggest an entire orchestra with only five instruments. Together, these two works constitute a program where predominates a certain lightness - embellished with a touch of humor.

The TEN Tenors:

Wish You Were Here

In the blazing heat of the Australian summer, 2016, The Ten Tenors were in rehearsal in Melbourne. They were doing their very first run through of David Bowie's iconic song, Heroes when the Twitter feed came through announcing David had just passed away. Just a few months later, the tragic news that Prince had also passed away. Although this album doesn't honour all the fallen artists in history, it is our intention to salute each through those we pay tribute to here. In the way that Roger Waters and Dave Gilbert penned the title track for their friend Syd Barrett that they missed so deeply when he left their band. Put simply, to all the lost artists, we wish you were here.

Pauline Frechette:

Colors of My Heart

Pauline Frechette is not just a singer/composer/lyricist. She is first and foremost a communicator - an entertainer with the humor and intensity of Jaques Brel, the musicality of Ravel and the spontaneity and theatricality of Bette Midler. And if bringing those diverse elements together seems an impossibility - or at least an improbability - well, once you understand the diversity of Pauline's background, you can then understand that it's not only possible for her to deliver the above magic, it is impossible for her not to deliver it. "Colors of My Heart" is a collection of songs rendered with truth and purity from the most vulnerable depths of the composer's heart.

Will Ackerman,Fiona Joy,Lawrence Blatt,Jeff Oster:

Contemporary Instrumental music enters a dynamic new era with FLOW – a fresh ensemble comprised of four of the genre's most innovative, critically-acclaimed and awarded independent artists: Australian pianist Fiona Joy, acoustic guitarist Lawrence Blatt, trumpet and flugelhorn player Jeff Oster and legendary GRAMMY®-winning guitarist Will Ackerman. The group debuted live to a sold-out crowd at Carnegie's Weill Hall, and is slated to perform at the 14th Annual Zone Music Awards at Roussel Hall in New Orleans this May.

Recently released on Blatt's label LMB Music, it was Blatt's passion for jazz fusion that sparked the idea of an ensemble. "The inspiration comes from Chick Corea's classic '70s all-star band Return To Forever with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola, who joined forces, wrote music and produced a sound that was more powerful than any of their individual works," he says. "That was the idea, bringing great musicians together with this kind of concept," he adds. "When I started thinking about who it might be, my thoughts turned naturally to Jeff and Fiona. We knew pretty quickly that this was going to develop into something."

FLOW's eponymous debut was recorded at Imaginary Road Studios in Southern Vermont, the longtime creative studio of Ackerman, founder of the legendary Windham Hill label. Windham Hill became a catalyst for a global musical phenomenon, driven by its bountiful legacy of best-selling instrumental solo works (George Winston, Liz Story, Alex DeGrassi, Michael Hedges) and Grammy-winning ensembles (Shadowfax). The artists concur they are pleased to continue that tradition in a modern way.

Norman Krieger:

Brahms - Piano Concerto No. 2 / Piano Sonata No. 1

Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation, highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair.  An early 5-star review of this disc on Amazon affirms that this is a "marvelous new recording of the Brahms 2nd Concerto," praising Mr. Krieger as "masterful" saying his "playing and interpretation has tremendous authority."

Joseph Calleja:

Joseph Calleja, one of the world's leading tenors, returns with his new album ‘Verdi' – due for release on Decca Classics on 2nd February 2018. The album sees Calleja explore the light and dark in Verdi's heroic tenor roles and features guest appearances from soprano Angela Gheorghiu and baritone Vittorio Vitelli.

Verdi has a special place in Calleja's heart, having made his debut as Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth when he was just 19. It is his first new album in six years – his last solo album ‘Amore' was released in September 2013 and he was also part of a 2013 recording of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. However, this new album marks a significant step into Verdi repertoire for Calleja, as he tackles new roles which he has yet to play on stage.

Verve Records and UMe will close out their year-long celebration of jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald's centennial with the ultimate present for her 100th birthday – a completely unreleased live album. More than 60 years after it was recorded, Ella At Zardi's finally is now released. Recorded on February 2, 1956 at Zardi's Jazzland in Hollywood, Ella At Zardi's features the entirety of the evening's two-set, 21-song performance, which captures an inspired Fitzgerald, backed by a stellar trio comprised of pianist Don Abney, bassist Vernon Alley and drummer Frank Capp, singing and swinging in front of an animated, adoring crowd, just days before she'd go on to record the album that would catapult her to stardom. The concert was originally recorded by Norman Granz to celebrate the creation of, and Fitzgerald's signing to, Verve Records, which Granz founded largely to give Fitzgerald the attention that he felt she wasn't receiving at her then-current label, Decca. Ella At Zardi's was planned as the label's inaugural release but shelved in favor of the now-classic studio album Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book, which kicked off a best-selling, signature series of Song Book releases. The Zardi's tapes languished in Verve's vaults for six decades.

Dreams and Daggers

GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant has had a remarkable rise to stardom in her professional career, and she's taking another big leap forward with Dreams and Daggers, her third album for Mack Avenue Records, available now.

"The songs on this album are of dreams and daggers. The daggers have been used at times to attack, at times to defend. For power, no doubt, to take it, to keep it. The dreams are the ones I caught looking out a window, or from the light sleep before the deep. I don't always know what they mean, but they are the ones I was able to keep. And yet dreams can be desires too. I wrote them down to make them true. That we may bring our wildness into view. That we may be unruled and unruly," explains McLorin Salvant.

Seong-Jin Cho:

Following his two previous Chopin albums on the Yellow Label, it is entirely fitting that Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, should turn to Debussy for his third album. Towards his life's close, the French composer edited the piano works of Chopin, an experience that reignited his creativity, opening his heart to music he had loved since childhood. In turn, Cho's connection to Debussy runs deep. "I have always loved Debussy's music, but my feeling for it has deepened during my studies with Michel Béroff at the Paris Conservatoire," Cho recalls. "Michel never presses me to accept his ideas on interpretation, which would be so easy for such a great master of Debussy's music. His lessons are like meetings in which we discuss my playing, talk about music and art, and allow things to develop naturally."
