OSM Chamber Soloists:

Beethoven, Strauss

Under the artistic direction of Andrew Wan, principal violist of the OSM, this album highlights the great musical qualities of the musicians of the OSM in reduced formation: Andrew Wan on violin, Neal Gripp on viola, Brian Manker on cello, Ali Yazdanfar on bass, Todd Cope on clarinet, Stéphane Lévesque on bassoon and John Zirbel on horn.

The Septuor in E flat major, op. 20, by Ludwig van Beethoven and Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders !, arrangement by Franz Hasenöhrl of the symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegel, op. 28, by Richard Strauss allows us to appreciate the mix of timbres of three important orchestral groups of the orchestra: strings, woodwinds and brass. After the Septuor, where the musical texture remains finely chiseled thanks to the variety of timbres, we marvel at Hasenöhrl's ingeniousness to suggest an entire orchestra with only five instruments. Together, these two works constitute a program where predominates a certain lightness - embellished with a touch of humor.

The Lao Tizer Band Set to Release - Songs From The Swinghouse,
Recorded Live at Conway Studios in Hollywood: Available March 16, 2018 via Yse Records

With more than five years since their last release, The Lao Tizer Band has taken the time to grow in every aspect. An updated larger band is exploring some new methods on their upcoming CD/DVD combo, Songs From The Swinghouse: recorded live in just three days at Conway Studios in Hollywood, the band explores three cover tunes with vocalist, a first for the group, alongside original instrumental tracks, bringing them to new heights of excellence and exuberance.

Featuring a thoughtful and at times surprising choice of tracks, while adding to an already stellar lineup of players with the addition of a seasoned vocalist, this is an album that has set a new path for the band and its dedicated fans. Songs From The Swinghouse features eight blistering original instrumentals and three iconic classic rock songs with reimagined arrangements. "We've never done anything with a vocalist and we've never done any cover songs, so this is the first time that I decided to delve into that realm, to basically expand the scope of our music," says Tizer. Critically acclaimed music-film director, Andy LaViolette (Snarky Puppy, Bokante, David Crosby, etc), documented the entire session in a simultaneous, 8-camera HD video shoot for the included DVD.

Kazem Abdullah - Sinfonieorchester Aachen:

Ravel - Daphnis and Chloe

Sensuous, lushly evocative and intricately constructed, Maurice Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe is widely regarded as his greatest orchestral masterpiece and one of the 20th century's finest ballet scores. This vast musical fresco with its shimmering harmonies, magical diaphanous textures and spectacular conclusion is compellingly realised by Kazem Abdullah and the Sinfonieorcehster Aachen in this eagerly awaited release from Coviello Classics.?

Stravinsky regarded Daphnis et Chloe as "not only Ravel's best work, but also one of the most beautiful products of French music" and it's easy to see why. Written with consummate finesse for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, this "choreographic symphony" is an intoxicating blend of warm, seductive harmonies and passionate intensity, realised on a large orchestral canvas. Three movements have become perennially popular: the luxuriant Lever du jour, the enchanting Pantomine and the raucous Danse g?n?rale (Bacchanale) which Ravel incorporated in the later Daphnis and Chlo? Suite No. 2. Elsewhere, Ravel displays the same deftness of touch with the much-loved Pavane pour une infante d?funte and Une barque sur l'oc?an, both masterly orchestrations of his charming piano miniatures.

Will Ackerman,Fiona Joy,Lawrence Blatt,Jeff Oster:

Contemporary Instrumental music enters a dynamic new era with FLOW – a fresh ensemble comprised of four of the genre's most innovative, critically-acclaimed and awarded independent artists: Australian pianist Fiona Joy, acoustic guitarist Lawrence Blatt, trumpet and flugelhorn player Jeff Oster and legendary GRAMMY®-winning guitarist Will Ackerman. The group debuted live to a sold-out crowd at Carnegie's Weill Hall, and is slated to perform at the 14th Annual Zone Music Awards at Roussel Hall in New Orleans this May.

Recently released on Blatt's label LMB Music, it was Blatt's passion for jazz fusion that sparked the idea of an ensemble. "The inspiration comes from Chick Corea's classic '70s all-star band Return To Forever with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola, who joined forces, wrote music and produced a sound that was more powerful than any of their individual works," he says. "That was the idea, bringing great musicians together with this kind of concept," he adds. "When I started thinking about who it might be, my thoughts turned naturally to Jeff and Fiona. We knew pretty quickly that this was going to develop into something."

FLOW's eponymous debut was recorded at Imaginary Road Studios in Southern Vermont, the longtime creative studio of Ackerman, founder of the legendary Windham Hill label. Windham Hill became a catalyst for a global musical phenomenon, driven by its bountiful legacy of best-selling instrumental solo works (George Winston, Liz Story, Alex DeGrassi, Michael Hedges) and Grammy-winning ensembles (Shadowfax). The artists concur they are pleased to continue that tradition in a modern way.

Norman Krieger:

Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation, highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair.  An early 5-star review of this disc on Amazon affirms that this is a "marvelous new recording of the Brahms 2nd Concerto," praising Mr. Krieger as "masterful" saying his "playing and interpretation has tremendous authority."

Verve Records and UMe will close out their year-long celebration of jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald's centennial with the ultimate present for her 100th birthday – a completely unreleased live album. More than 60 years after it was recorded, Ella At Zardi's finally is now released. Recorded on February 2, 1956 at Zardi's Jazzland in Hollywood, Ella At Zardi's features the entirety of the evening's two-set, 21-song performance, which captures an inspired Fitzgerald, backed by a stellar trio comprised of pianist Don Abney, bassist Vernon Alley and drummer Frank Capp, singing and swinging in front of an animated, adoring crowd, just days before she'd go on to record the album that would catapult her to stardom. The concert was originally recorded by Norman Granz to celebrate the creation of, and Fitzgerald's signing to, Verve Records, which Granz founded largely to give Fitzgerald the attention that he felt she wasn't receiving at her then-current label, Decca. Ella At Zardi's was planned as the label's inaugural release but shelved in favor of the now-classic studio album Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book, which kicked off a best-selling, signature series of Song Book releases. The Zardi's tapes languished in Verve's vaults for six decades.

Dreams and Daggers

GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant has had a remarkable rise to stardom in her professional career, and she's taking another big leap forward with Dreams and Daggers, her third album for Mack Avenue Records, available now.

"The songs on this album are of dreams and daggers. The daggers have been used at times to attack, at times to defend. For power, no doubt, to take it, to keep it. The dreams are the ones I caught looking out a window, or from the light sleep before the deep. I don't always know what they mean, but they are the ones I was able to keep. And yet dreams can be desires too. I wrote them down to make them true. That we may bring our wildness into view. That we may be unruled and unruly," explains McLorin Salvant.

Stacey Kent:

I Know I Dream

With over 2 million albums sold, a Grammy nomination and international recognition as one of the most successful and prolific jazz vocalist of her time, Stacey Kent stands strong among the artists that don't have much left to prove. Kent's brand new album, I Know I Dream, was recorded inside the famous Angel Studios in London with an orchestra of around 60 musicians, her first orchestral album in a career that spans two decades and more than 15 albums. So when Sony and OKeh asked her about making an album with a big orchestra, she felt this was the moment: "It's not every day that you get a call about a project with 58 musicians! Nowadays everyone tries to be reasonable but Sony had a real artistic vision".

Following his two previous Chopin albums on the Yellow Label, it is entirely fitting that Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, should turn to Debussy for his third album. Towards his life's close, the French composer edited the piano works of Chopin, an experience that reignited his creativity, opening his heart to music he had loved since childhood. In turn, Cho's connection to Debussy runs deep. "I have always loved Debussy's music, but my feeling for it has deepened during my studies with Michel Béroff at the Paris Conservatoire," Cho recalls. "Michel never presses me to accept his ideas on interpretation, which would be so easy for such a great master of Debussy's music. His lessons are like meetings in which we discuss my playing, talk about music and art, and allow things to develop naturally."

Banda Magda:

"An artist who fires on all artistic cylinders" – NPR
"fresh and retro-hip cool" – KCRW

The lightbulb went on. Composer, multi-instrumentalist, and firecracker performer Magda Giannikou suddenly understood: The world needed more light, and she was determined to bring it. That spark of insight, nurtured by a diverse, close-knit band, grew into the rainbow-bold meditations on courage, confidence, and resisting fear on Tigre, the band's third, wildly cinematic album. Released, September 15, 2017 on Verve Label Group), the album is a rallying cry to speak up and stand out, as the album presents Giannikou's most coherent and brightly orchestrated work to date.

Leif Ove Andsnes:

Leif Ove Andsnes will follow his string of award-winning Beethoven concerto recordings for Sony Classical with an album of solo piano works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Sibelius wrote over 150 works for piano, but the composer's works for the instrument have long languished in the shadow of his orchestral music. His piano pieces were often seen as lacking in the rich, sonorous textures that the composer brought to his full orchestral works and were therefore largely disregarded. Andsnes has scoured the composer's entire piano output, carefully selecting the pieces he believes deserve recognition and with which he feels a strong personal connection, uncovering ‘intriguing works with the wonderful Sibelius qualities we know'.

Memphis. Yes, I'm Ready

Inspired by Bridgewater's Return to Her Birth City of Memphis and the Exploration of Her Musical Roots and Influences

Every picture tells a story; every journey begins differently.  The story of Dee Dee Bridgewater's stunning new album, Memphis...Yes, I'm Ready, begins in that city, where she was born at Collins Chapel Hospital, located not far from where the album was recorded at Producer Willie Mitchell's historic Royal Studios.  Dee Dee's father, a trumpet player affectionately known as "Matt the Platter Cat" was a DJ at WDIA, the top Memphis radio station, and even when the family moved to neighboring Flint, Michigan, the young Dee Dee continued to listen to the great sounds of the Memphis music scene by tuning-in late night from across state lines.  And oh what a music scene it was!

Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov:

Star soprano Anna Netrebko and her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, are releasing a new duet album of love songs, Romanza, on September 1, 2017. Eighteen original romantic love songs were written and composed specially for the couple by Russian producer Igor Krutoy.  Romanza is not only Anna Netrebko's first duet album with husband Yusif, but also her first foray out of the realm of traditional core repertoire. Producer Igor Krutoy wrote all 18 album tracks with Anna and Yusif in mind. Many years of working together closely and a one of a kind friendship that stems from his collaboration with Anna and Yusif allowed Igor to write love songs that not only perfectly match their voices, but also are an homage to love in general.

The Laughing Apple

Yusuf / Cat Stevens, one of the most influential singer-songwriters of all time, released his highly anticipated new album, The Laughing Apple, on September 15 under his Cat-O-Log Records logo exclusively through Decca Records, the same label that launched his career 50 years ago. The Laughing Apple follows the common ‘60s template of combining newly-written songs with a number of covers – except that all the covers are from Yusuf's 1967 catalogue. The Laughing Apple celebrates some of his earliest material, presenting the songs as he has always wished they had been recorded. "There are some I always wanted to hear differently," he explains. "Many of my earlier recordings were overcooked with big band arrangements. They crowded the song out a lot of times."

Matt Haimovitz | Christopher O'Riley:

Acclaimed for their adventurous and wide-ranging recording projects – from Beethoven Sonatas on period instruments to genre-bending arrangements of Radiohead and Arcade Fire – the endlessly inventive duo of cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O'Riley returns to explore music of the Slavic soul. Anchored by the cello sonatas of the iconic triumvirate of Russian composers – Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich – and inspired by the subversive irony of Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano, TROIKA also delves into more recently-written, unexpected, and popular works. Whether subtle or blatantly rebellious, each work potently reveals the strength of the artistic voice in the face of political repression in mother Russia. The 2-SACD recording is on the PENTATONE Oxingale Series.

Whether interpreting a tune by Glenn Miller, Willie Nelson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, or Rodgers and Hart, there's no doubt that Lyn Stanley will put her distinctive stamp on each cover. Though she delivers every song with finesse and the confidence of a veteran song stylist, Stanley is just a few years into her vocal career. Releasing her first album, Lost in Romance in 2013, Stanley's impeccable phrasing allows the alto to communicate the lyrics with the sureness of an expert storyteller.

Trios for Violin, Cello & Harp

Analekta announces the release of the excellent album Trios for violin, cello and harp, an ambitious collaborative project featuring three accomplished young musicians recognized for their excellence: harpist Valérie Milot, violinist Antoine Bareil and cellist Stéphane Tétreault. Recorded at Église Saint-Augustin in Mirabel, Québec, during this past winter, the album highlights how well the musicians complement each other and the graceful blend of their instruments, first in the lively and ethereal trio by Jacques Ibert, and then, in strong contrast, in the trio composed by Henriette Renié – a composer known for the virtuosity of her works – in which the harp rises to the rank of solo instrument. The spirited Danse des Lutins for solo harp by the same composer, as well as the intense Passacaglia for violin and cello by Johan Halvorsen, inspired by Handel's Harpsichord Suite No. 7 in G minor, allow listeners to appreciate the musicality and immense talent of the three musicians, who are heard last of all playing the Schubert lied "Lob der Tränen" in a transcription of great delicacy.

Stephen Marchionda:

Granados - La Guitarra Poetica

The new release from Stephen Marchionda, "La guitarra poética", celebrates Enrique Granados' 150th anniversary with adventurous transcriptions for guitar taken from the composer's original piano music. During his lifetime Granados was highly valued for the poetry of his compositions, and Marchionda, honors this aspect with personal and virtuostic arrangements for guitar which breathe the poetic spirit. The guitar holds a special place in Spain, so not surprisingly it's imitated repeatedly in the original piano version of Danzas españolas. Especially impressive is the dazzling intensification of Rondalla aragonesa which culminates in wild rasgueados that embrace flamenco. Marchionda's renderings create an impressive authenticity and an illuminating link to Granados' interest in Spanish folkloric music.

Alain Lefevre - BPO, Falletta:

Mathieu-Con. No. 3 | Gershwin-An American In Paris

Analekta is proud to announce the release of André Mathieu: Concerto No. 3, the 21st album by the great pianist and composer Alain Lefèvre to be released by the label. Alain Lefèvre unveils the results of three years of hard work by Jacques Marchand, George Nicholson and himself aimed at restoring, in its original form, André Mathieu's famous Concerto No. 3.

Presented as a world premiere in February 2017 in Buffalo, where it was performed by Alain Lefèvre (who has been responsible for Mathieu's rehabilitation in cultural memory both here and elsewhere) and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the renowned JoAnn Falletta, the reconstituted Concerto No. 3 was enthusiastically received by the audience. Recorded at those performances, the album André Mathieu: Concerto No. 3 accurately conveys the brilliance of Alain Lefèvre and the enthusiasm of the musicians, aware as they were of sharing a highly emotional and one-of-a-kind moment. JoAnn Falletta had previously collaborated with Alain Lefèvre in presenting works by Mathieu – in New York's Carnegie Hall in 2013, among other settings.

Brahms - The Piano Trios

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his longtime collaborator, pianist Emanuel Ax, are joined by violinist Leonidas Kavakos in their first recording together for Sony Classical, of the piano trios of Johannes Brahms. Ax and Ma have collaborated in a distinguished catalog of Brahms recordings for Sony Classical, but this is their first recording together of the Piano Trios – and their first collaboration with Kavakos. For Ma, who believes Brahms wrote "really difficult music to play well," the collaboration with an old friend (Ax) and their new colleague (Kavakos) was an extraordinary experience. "What I was impressed by was that we could listen to a take and each one of us would make comments, but there was never a disagreement. We actually added these elements together, and it became a better performance. That was unusual. That doesn't happen often with three people, whether they know one another or not."

Cliburn SILVER 2017

A native of Minneapolis, 24-year-old pianist Kenny Broberg won the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition with performances that showed "an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices, and an unfailing sense of momentum" (Texas Classical Review). Released digitally on Decca Gold, Cliburn Silver 2017 features a selection of Broberg's live solo performances from the competition, including Bach's Toccata in C Minor, BWV 911 and Barber's Sonata for Piano, Op.26. He will be performing recital and concerto tours across the United States.
