Orchestra Mozart - Schubert / Symphony in C major

Deutsche Grammophon is extremely proud to release a recording of Claudio Abbado leading the Orchestra Mozart in a live performance of Schubert's Symphony in C major, D 944 "The Great". The conductor and orchestra enjoyed a highly fruitful working relationship, and that combined with Abbado's love of Schubert led to a truly memorable performance. "A magnificent interpretation ... in the precision of the gestures, in the way Abbado directs his orchestra, in the knowledgeable and intelligent shaping of each component of the score."

Bruckner Symphony No. 9

His passing this past January 2014 marked the end of an era in classical music. Only five months earlier, Claudio Abbado, one of the foremost conductors of the last and current century, had made what would turn out to be his last concert appearance. In late August 2013, at the 75th Lucerne Festival, Abbado conducted Schubert and Bruckner: indelible interpretations of two unfinished symphonies that both begin in darkness and end in an ethereal E major. Recorded by Accentus Music, Deutsche Grammophon now releases this final performance of Claudio Abbado with the album Bruckner Symphony No. 9.

The festival's chief executive, Michael Haefliger, recalled: "There was a sense in the hall that it might possibly be his final concert, so far removed and deeply transfigured did Claudio Abbado seem to all of us on this unforgettable evening, in this moment of unfathomable silence."

The Wall Street Journaldescribes the album as "an otherworldly account of Bruckner's 9th Symphony," adding, "Never have I heard as magisterial and moving performance of the work as that given by the 80-year-old maestro and his fabulous Lucerne Festival Orchestra."

With this release of Claudio Abbado's "swan-song", the Yellow Label pays tribute to the maestro six months after the loss to the world of one of the most inspirational classical musicians of modern times.
