Brahms: The String Sextets

The legacy of the Cypress String Quartet, which celebrated its 20th anniversary and valedictory season in 2016, is sealed by the ensemble's final recording – the two String Sextets by Johannes Brahms in which they are joined by longtime collaborators, violist Barry Shiffman and cellist Zuill Bailey. True to form, the Cypress String Quartet applied innovation to its last recording: live in front of a studio audience at Skywalker Sound Studio.

Beethoven: The Early String Quartets

The Cypress String Quartet (Cecily Ward, violin; Tom Stone, violin; Ethan Filner, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) releases the group's recording of Beethoven's Early Quartets on AVIE Records. The Cypress String Quartet completes its cycle of the genre's greatest oeuvre with this 2-CD set of Beethoven's six groundbreaking quartets, Op. 18, alongside a reissue of its 2012 self-released recording of Beethoven's Late Quartets. For the past several seasons, the Cypress String Quartet has immersed itself in performing Beethoven on tours throughout the United States and Europe as well as recording all 16 works plus the "Grande Fugue" (Große Fuge). The completion of the Beethoven cycle recording is a fitting celebration of the Bay Area-based ensemble's 20th anniversary as well as the group's valedictory season: the Cypress String Quartet's final performance will take place in June 2016, preceded by a Beethoven celebration performing all of the quartets throughout the city of San Francisco in May.

Beethoven: The Middle Quartets

The Cypress String Quartet (Cecily Ward, violin; Tom Stone, violin; Ethan Filner, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) has steeped itself in performing Beethoven's string quartets over the last 18 years and now releases Beethoven's Middle Quartets, Op. 59 Nos. 1, 2, and 3 (the "Razumovsky" Quartets); Op. 74 ("The Harp"); and Op. 95 (Quartetto serioso) via AVIE Records. The 3-CD set was recorded at Skywalker Sound by Mark Willsher and produced by Cecily Ward, and Cellist Jennifer Kloetzel says, "Hardly a week has passed that we haven't been studying or performing one of Beethoven's string quartets. Our first 12 years together were spent exploring, performing, and crafting our ‘take' on the Late Quartets and then we made the choice to move backwards in time to these robust, earthy pieces – the Middle Quartets – so rich and massive after the more spiritual Late Quartets."

Beethoven: The Late String Quartets

The Cypress String Quartet (Cecily Ward and Tom Stone, violins; Ethan Filner, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) released a three-CD box set of Beethoven string quartets on March 6 2012. Interestingly the date coincides with the anniversary of Opus 127's premiere performance in 1825. Historically referred to as Beethoven's "Late Period," the six quartets featured were written between 1822 and 1826. Organized chronologically, The final disc (No.1) includes Beethoven's E-flat Major, Op. 127 and A Minor, Op. 132 Quartets. Both pieces were commissioned by Prince Nicholas Galitzin in 1822. With new program notes all of the recordings were produced by Cypress first violinist Cecily Ward, and engineered by Mark Willsher at Skywalker Sound. The March 6 release.
