The EP follows his recent critically well-received album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge It’s Grace, and debuts a new track, “To The Moon” with fellow flautist and hip hop luminary André 3000. The EP is out now across all music providers, and you can listen here. You can watch the accompanying video that features mesmerizing visuals influenced by the album cover art.

The Possession EP release coincides with Shabaka’s ongoing international tour, which brings his experimental soundscapes and introspective compositions to audiences around the world. Upcoming dates include venues across Australia, Japan, US, and China. For more information on the tour please visit https://www.shabakahutchings.com/shabaka-hutchings/#/.

Possession builds on themes from Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace - a deeply poetic work that NPR Music’s Robin Hilton called, “Maybe the most essential listening of the week, if not the year.”  In addition to Andre 3000, notable musicians joining Shabaka on this musical exploration include special guests, Billy Woods, Elucid, Esperanza Spalding, Nduduzo Makhathini, Brandee Younger, Carlos Niño and Jason Moran.

Shabaka:

Percieve its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace

After putting down the saxophone, the instrument he has become synonymous with, Shabaka returns with his first full length album under his own name.

Expanding off the meditative 2022 EP Afrikan Culture, his new album Perceive its beauty, Acknowledge its Grace is a deeply moving suite of primarily instrumental music.

The listening experience is reflective and contemplative, with passages flowering from one musical concept to the next, encouraging deep attention that rewards the listener with throughlines and motifs throughout the record.

Shabaka is found playing the flute on this album, and has enlisted key artists such as Andre 3000, Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney, Floating Points, and more to help build this all-encompassing aural landscape.

Afrikan Culture

Celebrated saxophonist, philosopher, bandleader, and musician Shabaka Hutchings, now professionally known as Shabaka across all solo musical efforts, debuts his first major label solo body of work, Afrikan Culture (impulse!).  Entirely written by Shabaka, the eight-track digital only EP showcases him on various wind instruments and focuses on the aural meditative space.

Produced by Shabaka and frequent collaborator Dilip Harris, Afrikan Culture takes you on a sonically healing journey. Immersed in a sea of sound, diverse instruments that include the Shakuhachi (a Japanese end-blown flute), a Kora (a stringed instrument used extensively in West Africa), a Mbira (a “thumb piano” from Africa), and a music box envelopes the listener in a soothing sound that lingers on well past the last played note.
