Memento

Bruce Wolosoff - Memento takes the listener on a journey imbued by various genres. Throughout, Wolosoff opens his heart. His inner voice is his guide, and all his own.

Pianist-composer Bruce Wolosoff is a musical alchemist, organically mixing his multiple experiences in the worlds of jazz, rock, blues and classical music. His new solo album, Memento, melds the evolution of Wolosoff’s performance and compositional style into a genre that is all his own and true to himself. Wolosoff is a “formidable pianist” (Gramophone) who can tackle the great romantics like Busoni and Liszt. He can improvise like Bach and Beethoven as well as today’s jazz greats. His contemporary compositions are informed by his past whilst imbued with his current belief in “the primacy of lyricism and melody.”

With its baroque figuration and bittersweet harmonies, Memento seems to glance towards the music of Astor Piazzolla (the bandoneón- playing composer of tango nuevo who was a stylistic polyglot like Wolosoff). Is it the work’s emotional ambiguities that give it such an evocatively melancholy cinematic character?

Paradise Found

The distinguished New York-based composer-pianist Bruce Wolosoff synthesizes traditional tonal idioms with lifelong enthusiasms for jazz, blues, and rock music, creating a distinct musical language that speaks to the heart, but is unmistakably contemporary. His soaring, soulful melodies are strikingly suited to the cello, “in some ways my favorite instrument,” admits Wolosoff, “after my own of course.” For Paradise Found, he reunites with Grammy Award-winning cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio – the pair previously collaborated on Wolosoff’s Cello Concerto, a Top 10 Billboard Classical chart hit – for the first recordings of his two Cello Sonatas, and two miniatures Circe and The Woods.
 
Paradise Found is indelibly inspired by the splendors of the natural world. The title track – Wolosoff’s first cello sonata – was composed under the shadow of 2020’s first COVID lockdown and serves as an affirmation of lasting beauty when the world was plunged into a very dark place. “In composing this piece,” Wolosoff reveals, “I wanted to remind myself, and future listeners, that the world is still beautiful.”
