Poul Ruders, Becky Starobin, David Starobin: Bio

Poul Ruders (b. 1949) is one of the era's most highly regarded composers for both the  opera stage and the symphonic concert hall. His operas have been staged  in Copenhagen, New York City, London, Toronto and Munich, and his  orchestral music has been commissioned by orchestras including the  Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and the BBC Symphony  Orchestra.

Ruders  lives a spartan life in the countryside of Denmark. The isolation has  afforded him the opportunity to produce a deep and highly varied catalog  which includes five operas, 45 symphonic works and concertos, and  dozens of solo and chamber pieces. In July of 2019, Poul Ruders will  celebrate his 70th birthday with the world premiere of his newest  opera, The Thirteenth Child,  staged by the Santa Fe Opera.  In conjunction with the premiere, Bridge  Records will release a studio recording of the two act ‘fairytale'  opera. Also on tap in 2019/2020/2021 are new productions by The Boston  Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Royal Danish Opera  (Copenhagen) of Ruders's best known opera,The Handmaid's Tale, after the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood.

The  music of Poul Ruders has been well-documented by the record labels  DaCapo (Denmark) and Bridge (USA), and is published by Edition Wilhelm  Hansen, Copenhagen.

Becky & David Starobin have worked together on a series of creative projects, beginning soon after meeting in 1969, as students at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. Co-founders of the recording firm, Bridge Records, Inc., the Starobins have overseen the production of more than 500 recordings ranging from solo recitals to grand opera.  The Bridge catalog has been the recipient of three Grammy awards, and 34 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, and the Starobins have been honored with ASCAP's Deems Taylor Award, and the Cannes/MIDEM Classical Award.

Becky Starobin was trained as a violinist and began her professional life as a teacher at New York University and as founder of the Suzuki string program at The Third Street Settlement School.  She became the President of Bridge Records, Inc. in 2005.  In 2011, she was approached by Danish composer Poul Ruders, who asked her to write a libretto for an opera based on a story by the Brothers Grimm.  After writing a scenario for a two-act opera, she collaborated with husband David Starobin on the libretto for The Thirteenth Child.

David Starobin is an acclaimed classical guitarist, recordings producer, writer and filmmaker. Nominated for Grammy Awards as guitarist, mandolinist and as "Classical Producer of the Year", Starobin is a revered teacher at the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music.  His recent film String Trio, Los Angeles 1946, focuses on Arnold Schoenberg's seminal masterpiece, and was filmed in the composer's Los Angeles home.
