Placido Domingo powers into record books with a 60 year career / Yahoo
Posted At : July 8, 2019 12:00 AM
When Peter Gelb took over New York's legendary Metropolitan Opera in 2006, one of his jobs was to organise a farewell for Placido Domingo. But 13 years later the indefatigable Spanish tenor is still "the king of opera", headlining France's oldest musical festival at Orange at the weekend. "Since it was unimaginable that he could possibly be singing for much longer after an unmatched Met career that was soon to span four decades of starring roles," Gelb told AFP, "one of the responsibilities I was preparing for was Placido's farewell."
With many singers' voices withering by the time they hit their forties, the unfailingly modest 78-year-old has somehow managed to keep performing at the top level. "Instead of retiring, Placido apparently discovered his own fountain of youth, reinventing himself as a baritone," Gelb said.
Indeed the singer, who was one of the Three Tenors alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras, set a new record in May by singing his 151th role. A month earlier he had celebrated his 4,000th performance in a career that stretches back 60 years. But Domingo knows he has to look after himself, cancelling interviews after rehearsals on Friday in the southern French town of Orange to preserve his voice having recently pulled out of appearing in "La Traviata" in Munich.

The internationally renowned tenor is performing at the Red Square Gala Concert in Moscow on Wednesday in the run-up to the World Cup. Here's everything you need to know about Plácido Domingo.
A Spanish conductor and one of the most popular operatic tenors of his time, Domingo was born on 21 January 1941 in Madrid, Spain, Domingo moved to Mexico with his family when he was eight. He studied piano and conducting at the National Conservatory of Music, but focused more on singing when his vocal talent became clear.
In 1961 when he was 20 years old, the tenor made his operatic debut in Mexico City. In 1965, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, and in 1968 he performed at La Scala in Milan. Throughout his long career, Domingo has performed more than 120 different opera roles, including Otello and Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca. He continued to learn new roles well into his 60s, but began to focus on baritone roles in his 70s. In 1993, Domingo founded the competition ‘Operalia' to discover great young opera singers. OPERALIA, the international Opera competition founded by Plácido Domingo in 1993, will be presented in Portugal for the very first time this summer. The competition will take place at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, which is located in the historical center of Lisbon's Chiado District since its inauguration in 1793. A theatre of extraordinary architectural value and beauty, São Carlos has enjoyed a long prestigious history interrupted only by the Portuguese Civil War of the 19th Century and the repairs it sustained in the 1930s. It has welcomed numerous notable International Artists, including Maria Callas, Alfredo Kraus, Monserrat Caballé and Plácido Domingo, who made his debut in Lisbon in the title role of Verdi's Otello in 1989. The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos now welcomes the 26th Edition of the prestigious OPERALIA competition from August 27th to September 2nd, 2018. The competition will feature 40 competitors from 24 different countries, including two Portuguese singers.
OPERALIA has been searching for the new generations of young talented opera singers for more that 25 years. The first Edition was held in Paris in 1993, and has since traveled across the globe to cities like Mexico City, Madrid, Bordeaux, Tokyo, Hamburg, Quebec, Budapest, Milan, Moscow, Beijing, Verona, Los Angeles, London and Guadalajara, among others. Last year, OPERALIA was hosted by the magnificent Astana Opera in Kazakhstan, one of the youngest Opera houses in the world with only a 3 year history.
The worldwide competition has already served as a launching platform for many world-renowned artists. The long list of artists who have won OPERALIA awards undoubtedly attests to its success in discovering, nurturing and launching the careers of great and talented artists. Some of the winners who have firmly established themselves in the world of opera include the great Swedish soprano Nina Stemme, the enchanting mezzo-soprano from the United States, Joyce DiDonato, the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, Puerto-Rican soprano Ana María Martínez, the Mexican tenors Rolando Villazón and Arturo Chacón-Cruz and of course, one of today's most sought-after soprano from Bulgaria, Sonya Yoncheva.

Placido Domingo will star in a return to the Los Angeles Opera in Woody Allen's first opera production, Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi," Allen first staged "Gianni Schicchi" with the Opera in 2008, adapting Puccini's work based on a side character in Dante's "Inferno" and transplanting the story to a more modern era with allusions to Italian cinema and a fast-paced comic style reminiscent of the director's films. The British baritone Thomas Allen -- no relation to the director -- performed in the title role in 2008. Domingo will star in the latest staging which opens as the season debut on September 12.
The Spanish tenor, one of the world's most identifiable opera singers, is also performing in a production of Allen's "Gianni Schicchi" starting on June 30 at Madrid's Teatro Real. Placido Domingo - Encanto del Mar / The Buffalo News: Gusto review
Posted At : October 22, 2014 12:00 AM
Inside every singer with a big voice there seems to be a little voice, demanding a pop project. Placido Domingo, one of the great voices of our time, is accompanied on this disc, Encanto del Mar, by a small cafe ensemble: guitar, cello, bass, harp, percussion, occasional saxophone and bandoneon. One of the songs is "Aranjuez," based on the beautiful concerto by Rodrigo, and Domingo also sings "En Mediterranee," by Georges Moustaki, the French/Greek writer of romantic songs. There are also traditional Cyprian and Catalan songs. Domingo has it over other opera singers tackling pop projects in that his voice, in this setting, isn't annoying. He has a tremendous feel for the music, and the songs sound great in his rich voice, especially when as you listen you feast your eyes on the pictures of him on the beach. It's frustrating, though, that the songs give his voice no workout at all. Most songs have a range of just a few notes and you are sitting there thinking, this man can sing Wotan! So it is kind of a waste, like admiring a greyhound just sitting there in a little cage. But it's pretty all the same. - Mary Kunz Goldman

Placido Domingo to sing ahead of World Cup final in Rio
Posted At : June 11, 2014 12:00 AM
Plácido Domingo, a longtime soccer fan, will perform a concert in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the World Cup finals. The Spanish tenor is scheduled to perform on July 11 in a concert that will also include pianist Lang Lang and soprano Ana Maria Martinez.
The performance, which will be held at the HSBC Arena in Rio, will also feature the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, conducted by Eugene Kohn. Domingo has sung at several World Cups, soccer's biggest event that takes place once every four years.
This year's World Cup is scheduled to take place June 12 to July 13 in Rio.
In 2010, Domingo was on hand to celebrate his home country Spain's victory over the Netherlands in South Africa, but he didn't sing at that World Cup because we was in the midst of a run of Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" at London's Royal Opera.
Domingo recently completed a run of Massenet's "Thais" at Los Angeles Opera, where he serves as general director. The opera star is scheduled to be back at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the annual Operalia competition in August, followed by a September engagement of "La Traviata."

Classicalite review: Placido Domingo's new 'Verdi' album on Sony Classical
Posted At : August 6, 2013 12:00 AM
It was only a matter of time, but listening to this first baritone album from Plácido Domingo, the timing seems right. The septuagenarian singer (for some people, truly, age is a state of mind, and sometimes of voice) has been building up his baritone roles for a few years now, starting with Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, progressing through the same composer's Rigoletto, Nabucco and onwards. And truth be told, though his charisma has never dimmed, the voice sometimes has missed that special tinta, the baritonal snarl that is the mark of a true Verdian baritone. On the evidence of this album, he has found something just as convincing. READ THE FULL REVIEW

Placido Domingo Pairs with Pop Artists
Posted At : January 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Arguably best known for his work with The Three Tenors, Placido Domingo has struck out on his own once more to release his first pop album in over 20 Years, "Songs." Having sung over 123 different roles, more than any other Tenor, it is no surprise that Domingo slides easily into these new songs ranging from "Besame mucho" a 1940s Mexican classic, to "From This Moment On" originally sung by Shania Twain. Domingo pulls music from classic soundtracks, like The Godfather, Chaplin's Limelight and the more modern Moulin Rouge.
In addition to stirring solo songs,? on his new album the man crowned "The King of Opera" by Newsweek shares his microphone with numerous voices of the modern age, such as "Britain's Got Talent" star Susan Boyle, Josh Groban, Broadway stars Harry Connick Jr. and Megan Hilty, and his son Placido Jr.
In addition to releasing his new Album, and performing around the world, Domingo remains in his position as General Director of the Los Angeles Opera
