After devastating injury, Milos returns with deeply personal album - Sound of Silence / New Classical Tracks
Posted At : January 9, 2020 12:00 AM
Miloŝ Karadaglić is a guitarist from Montenegro who now calls London home. His star rose quickly after the release of his debut album in 2011. Five years later, he was faced with the possibility of never being able to play his guitar again. "When you are going from one concert to another, from one continent to another, from one recording studio to another, it's takes a lot of energy out of you. When I started to feel that it was difficult to play, I didn't really know what struck me. It was very, very shocking, and that kind of kicked me sideways."
For two painful years Miloŝ searched for answers to heal his crippling hand issues. It's a journey that he says has changed his life. He's more relaxed, more focused, and he's discovered new meaning in his music.

The guitarist Miloš had to stop performing for over a year, as he dealt with an injury to his right hand. The time allowed him to recalibrate and rebuild his technique without the strain of concert tours. It also allowed him to reevaluate his priorities, and listen to other people's music. All of which played a part in his new release, called Sound of Silence.

Milos - Sound of Silence is WCRB: CD of the Week
Posted At : October 28, 2019 12:00 AM
Many artists have been through the trauma of injury, forced to stop and withdraw at a high point in their performing lives. A thumb-bone abnormality left pianist Murray Perahia facing the idea of a life without the piano. Pianist Leon Fleisher spent decades with only one functioning hand. And conductor/violinist Reinhard Goebel lost fine motor control of his left hand.
Montenegrin guitarist Milos Karadaglic has faced injury, too. For six years, up until 2016, he gave 120 performances a year, recorded new albums, and learned new repertoire - all of this while chronically jet-lagged and constantly pushing himself to do more. His playing was better than it had ever been. Then came the moment when his hand hurt so desperately he could no longer hold his guitar. "The craziest dreams were coming true," he says, "and then this."
The miracle is that when these artists are able to recover and rediscover their instruments, they invariably speak of revelations, and Karadaglic is back. He has transformed the silence of his darkest period into an eclectic album of popular songs and classical jewels on "Sound of Silence."

Milos returns with new album featuring music from Portishead, Radiohead and Leonard Cohen / udiscovermusic.

Miloš returns with his new album ‘Sound Of Silence' featuring classical guitar pieces and songs by Portishead, Radiohead and Leonard Cohen. Miloš, described as, "The hottest guitarist in the world" will release Sound Of Silence on 13th September.
Miloš' first three releases achieved major chart successes around the globe and turned him into "classical music's guitar hero" (BBC Music Magazine). His album of classic songs by The Beatles, Blackbird, received unanimous acclaim. Unfortunately Miloš' was struck by an inexplicable but devastating hand injury when his new album was already in development and a major international concert tour was booked. Unable to play, he was forced to pull out of multiple engagements and studio dates, with no real sense of when or if he might recover. At the highest point in his career, the multi-award-winning musician reached the lowest point in his life, and it is this that inspired Sound Of Silence.
Sound Of Silence is Miloš' personal reflection on that time. The album includes classical guitar pieces he played while rebuilding himself from the ground up, as well as varied songs he listened to when he had to rest and escape from it all. Miloš' interpretations of songs like Portishead's ‘Sour Times', Radiohead's ‘Street Spirit' and Leonard Cohen's ‘Famous Blue Raincoat' are featured alongside guitar pieces by Pujol and Tarrega. Saxophonist and friend Jess Gillam joins Miloš for two melancholic duets, as well as hang player, and regular Björk collaborator, Manu Delago on the classic song ‘Nights in White Satin'.

Milos Karadaglic on KDFC: State Of the Arts
Posted At : March 24, 2015 12:00 AM
As we celebrate 'With a Little Bit of Pluck' during our Carnival of the Instruments, a look at how one of the top guitarists working today got his start - largely by chance. Miloš Karadaglić didn't come from a particularly musical family, and as a child in Montenegro didn't have musical aspirations - until he heard what Segovia could do.
Milos as he is known, has released several CDs now, both playing solo recital repertoire, as well as accompanied by orchestra. But he didn't feel the pull of a musical career early on... and benefitted from an instrument that happened to be at his house. "I didn't fancy to play the violin, or piano, or anything like that. I remembered we had a guitar, I had a good voice. I wanted to sing and play the guitar, strum a couple of chords, and that was it. And that's why I was attracted to the guitar. And I think that's how everybody's attracted to the guitar in the beginning." He says he almost gave up the instrument in the early days of his studies, "...until the time when I heard the guitar played by Segovia, and I wanted to be able to create the music on the guitar which sounded like that."

Milos Karadaglic - Aranjuez featured on Classical MPR: New Classical Tracks
Posted At : August 27, 2014 12:00 AM
Miloš Karadaglić has just released his fourth and what he refers to as his most ambitious recording yet. "I say the most ambitious one because it was my first concerto recording, of two of the most iconic and important concertos in the guitar repertoire," he says. "Also the other repertoire on the disc represents some of the most important pieces in the solo repertoire. So it's a record that so far, I am most proud of, in a way, because somehow it showcases the guitar on its highest artistic level and I couldn't have had better collaborators to make it work than I did." Aranjuez: The young guitarist Milos from Montenegro continues to win new fans wherever he goes. Now with this recording he brings his trademark passion and intimacy to bear on the two most popular works for guitar and orchestra ever composed. In the tender moments he caresses the strings, and through some close miking, every caress can be felt. Having Yannick on hand to guide the London Philharmonic and let Milos "do his thing" should help the guitarist gain some new admirers in Philadelphia.

Milos discusses new 'Aranjuez' CD on WCRB - Journal
Posted At : August 6, 2014 12:00 AM
Having established himself as a premier classical guitarist, Miloš Karadaglic takes Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez as the starting point for a journey across the Spanish landscape, paying tribute to the extraordinary music and musicians that placed the modern classical guitar firmly on the international stage.
Karadaglic's debut album, Mediterràneo, topped charts, and earned him Gramophone Magazine's Young Artist of the Year award. Just one year later, he built his second album, Pasión, which won Classic Brit and Echo Klassik awards, on that foundation. Now, with Aranjuez, his first concerto recording, he allows the full range of his talents to shine. The young guitarist's intelligent and technical voice rings clearly not only in solo pieces, but also in works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Two works with that ensemble bookend the recording: Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasia para un gentilhombre. Despite his age, Karadaglic navigates these tracks with care and complexity. According to him, "Aranjuez serves a different reality where emotion overflows, and the string becomes a voice. It is homage to the music and musicians that changed the course of history for the guitar." The recording is unquestionably a tribute to the artists who came before Karadaglic, but it also reflects own voice and perspective.
Following the release of his latest album, Aranjuez, guitarist Miloš Karadaglic speaks with WCRB - Boston / Cathy Fuller about his first guitar, his first concerto album, and what it means when he gets goosebumps during a concert.
Tune in to 99.5 WCRB all week to hear Miloš Karadaglic's Aranjuez.

Milos Karadaglic - Aranjuez / NPR: Weekend Edition Sunday interview
Posted At : July 20, 2014 12:00 AM
If you're a classical guitarist, it may be impossible to resist the pull of one iconic piece: the Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer . Many musicians regard it as the holy grail of guitar repertoire, including a man so big in the classical world he is known by only one name: .
"One thing about this particular piece is that this melody really transcends into so many different areas, to so many different genres," says 30-year-old Milos Karadaglić, who was born across the Mediterranean from Spain in the tiny Balkan country of Montenegro. "While it is a classical guitar piece and the most iconic of classical guitar pieces, it has inspired so many other musicians to play it."
Milos' latest album is called Aranjuez, but as he explained to NPR's Arun Rath, it isn't just a tribute to Rodrigo: "It's about the journey of the guitar in the 20th century." He spoke with Rath about crafting a narrative from the work of Rodrigo and another Spanish composer, . Hear their conversation at the audio link. Milos Karadaglic - Aranjuez / Chicago on the Aisle review
Posted At : July 10, 2014 12:00 AM
When I chatted with the young Montenegrin classical guitar virtuoso Miloš Karadaglić last November, about an impending solo appearance at City Winery, he made a brief digression to a major project then in progress – a recordng with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the London Philharmonic Orchestra that would pair Joaquín Rodrigo's popular "Concierto de Aranjuez" and "Fantasía para un gentilhombre." Karadaglić described it as the biggest event of his artistic life.
The CD has just been released, and it is a multifaceted beauty: eloquent, warmly spirited performances of both concertos plus three solo turns that alone might justify the price of the disc. What's more, the new CD hits just as the 31-year-old guitarist returns to Chicagoland to play – what else? – the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conductor Robert Moody on July 11th at the Ravina Festival.
It's hard to know what to admire most about Karadaglić's masterly Aranjuez. More than technically effortless, his playing reflects a profound poetic rapport with Rodrigo's flamenco-inspired music. By turns singing, incisive, sensual and brilliant, this is a recording I could imagine living with in desert-island bliss. Nezet-Seguin's all-in engagement with music and soloist is also evident in the London Philharmonic's vivacious support. READ THE FULL Chicago on the Aisle REVIEW.

Milos - Aranjuez / WQXR: Album Of the Week
Posted At : July 7, 2014 12:00 AM
This week's WQXR - New York 'Album Of the Week' features guitarist Miloš and his new Deutsche Grammophon release: Aranjuez, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, conductor
Miloš Karadaglic, the first classical guitarist signed to DG in modern times, returns from the Latin American territory of 2012's "Pasion" to his instrument's core Iberian repertoire featured on his debut album. Joining him on this third release are Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the London Philharmonic for a cornerstone concerto in the guitar repertoire: Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. A bold step? Of course. But Miloš (who goes just by his first name, a la Madonna) pulls it off, bringing much variety of color to the solo part and blending well in moments such as the duet with the cor anglais that opens the second movement. Those qualities are also apparent in a couple of De Falla transcriptions and a florid solo version of the Beatles's "Michelle."

Milos Karadaglic / Limelight Magazine feature
Posted At : April 15, 2014 12:00 AM
With or without sun-kissed backdrop, the well-groomed 30-year-old radiates a bronzed charisma of his own, hailing from the tiny republic of Montenegro nestled between the Balkan mountains and the Adriatic Sea. His slick image has undeniably played a part in his swift rise to stardom as Deutsche Grammophon's first major guitar signing, for which the label immediately dispensed with the awkward ‘Karadaglić' to introduce an artist memorable and exotic enough to go by a single name, like Madonna or Psy. Mee. Losh. Try it; it rolls irresistibly off the tongue.
Miloš Karadaglić himself speaks in soft, fluid tones with a delicately spiced accent, much like the mellifluous sound of his guitar: an instrument he insists is the most accessible in the world, regardless of genre. "There is something very, very special about guitar, because it translates to so many different areas of humanity," he muses. "One of the first things that human beings did is stick a string between two pieces of wood, and somehow it happened that it became the most popular instrument."
