Ludovico Einaudi - 12 Songs From Home is a most intimate concert / The Middlebury Campus
Posted At : November 12, 2020 12:00 AM
Covid-19 wreaked havoc across the world both physically and mentally, stripping some of their loved ones and others of their mental health. I thankfully fell only into the latter category, and while I was spared the full extent of the pandemic's destruction, I did not leave unscathed. In returning home, I found that an incredible paradox arose, one in which I was simultaneously greeted with overwhelming love and inescapable loneliness. After months of seeing the same four faces day in and day out, I found that the repetition only served to push me further into myself. That is, until one day when I was scrolling through Apple Music and happened upon an album with a beautifully simplistic design that demanded my attention. It was a plain off-white canvas with a simple image drawn only from five deliberately imperfect lines and inside, written in a soft handwriting, "12 Songs From Home."
I pressed play and tossed my phone to the other side of my bed, laying down with my eyes closed. I was soon enraptured by a delicate piano melody played directly from the composer's home to mine. Accompanying his deft keystrokes was a light crackle of the recording and muffled sounds of Einaudi breathing. This is not a studio album; it is precisely the opposite. You can hear the soft creaking of footsteps in his home; a light shuffle as he readjusts his seating. The album is designed as an invitation into his life, an intimate human connection I hadn't experienced in weeks.

The Guardian spends 'Sunday with Ludovico Einaudi'
Posted At : November 8, 2020 12:00 AM
Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on November 23rd 1955. Perhaps it was his mother, an amateur pianist, who gave him the first impulse to music, planting the seeds for what would become a fruitful, illustrious career. He began to study music at the Conservatory of Turin and graduated with a diploma in composition under Azio Corghi at the Conservatory of Milan. Immediately he began post-graduate studies with Luciano Berio, with whom he worked as assistant, and later with Karlheinz Stockhausen. In 1982 his talents would win him a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he first came into contact with the American minimalism. He spent the next several years composing for the ballet, the cinema and the theater, including "Sul filo d'Orfeo" (1984), "Time out" (1988), "The Wild Man" (1991), and "Salgari" (1995), as well as many pieces for orchestra and ensemble, which were performed at La Scala of Milan, the Paris Ircam and the Lincoln Center in New York. With the album "Stanze" (1992), a collection of sixteen compositions for harpist Cecilia Chailly, he set off on "a journey towards essentiality, trying to achieve the maximum expressive intensity using the minimum indispensable". But it was with "Le Onde" (1996), his first solo album, inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel, that he captured piano world's attention, further enhanced by the following "Eden Roc" (1999), in which he played with a string quintet and duduk master Djavan Gasparyan, and "I giorni" (2001), a cycle of ballads for piano inspired by a trip into Mali. He returned to Africa two years later at the Festival au Desert. The new album "Diario Mali" with kora master Ballaké Sissoko blossomed from this experience. The score he wrote in 2002 for the remake of "Doctor Zhivago" triumphed at the New York Film Festival. The increasing prestige of his soundtracks would be confirmed by "Not of This World" (2000), "Light of My Eyes" (2001), "Strange Crime" (2004), "This is England", film (2004) and TV series (2010), "The Untouchables" (2011), "Samba" (2014), "The water diviner" (2015) and "The third murder" (2017). The live recorded performance at La Scala of Milan as well as the special concerts at the Hangar Bicocca and the Royal Albert Hall, marked the achievement of full artistic expression. The more concentrated, introspective and meditative was the studio album "Una mattina" (2004), the more expanded, challenging, sumptuous was the following "Divenire" with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Both records, which were already topping the classical charts, crashed into the pop charts too for the first time. He was the only classical musician to play at the first iTunes festival. During the extended world tour that followed, he never stopped writing new music. In 2009 he released "Cloudland", with Robert and Ronald Lippok, and "Nightbook", a nocturnal, interior work that "projects the piano in every direction, like a shadow". The peak performance of his European and American tour was once again at the Royal Albert Hall, recorded live and released as a double CD and DVD. For two consecutive summers he conducted the Orchestra della Notte della Taranta, producing a visionary musical direction that left a mark in the "black land of the tarantola". In 2013 he released "In a time lapse", a reflection on time, recorded in a monastery and "conceived as a suite or as the chapters of a single novel", in which his piano was accompanied by strings, percussion and electronic tracks. The world tour that followed scored many remarkable performances, such as the Sidney Opera House, the Arena of Verona and the acclaimed "Piano Africain", for six pianos and six balafons and marimbas, which opened the Piano City Milano festival in 2014. The album, "Elements", released in 2015, sprang "from the desire to start anew, following different paths to knowledge".
Seven Days Walking is the title of the new album by Ludovico Einaudi, set to be released on March 15, 2019, three and a half years after Elements and a triumphal world tour. Seven Days Walking is divided into seven episodes, seven albums (Day One, Day Two, etc. until Day Seven), which will be released at monthly intervals. Each episode is focused on several main themes, which are recurring in different form: seven variations following the same imaginary itinerary. Or the same itinerary, retraced in seven different moments. Seven Days Walking was recorded between September and October 2018 in Schloss Elmau (Germany) and Air Studios in London (England)

Ludovico Einaudi's 'Nomadland' music won't qualify for Oscar's 'Best Score,' but you can listen to it now / IndieWire
Posted At : September 29, 2020 12:00 AM
The rapturous response to the unveiling of "Nomadland" at the Toronto and New York Film festivals has catapulted director Chloé Zhao's new film as an instant Oscar contender for Best Picture, Actress, Director, and Cinematography. The film's subtle and moving score by Ludovico Einaudi has also received positive notices, but "Nomadland" and the Italian composer will not qualify for Best Score this awards season.
The reason is simple: Einaudi did not write the "Nomadland" music specifically for the film. Zhao used tracks from his previous albums, with much of it coming from a 2019 seven-album collection titled "Seven Days Walking."
The music was inspired by hikes the prolific composer took in the Italian Alps. According the film's press notes, Einaudi followed the same hiking path for seven days, but opened "himself up to the different emotions and stimuli he experienced while negotiating changing light, temperature, wildlife and weather conditions." Each of the seven albums, titled "Day One" up to "Day Seven," was music based on those different emotions.

Ludovico Einaudi shares music for calmer times with KCRW
Posted At : April 17, 2020 12:00 AM
Celebrated pianist and film composer Ludovico Einaudi's music has been a mainstay on KCRW over the years, and he's been a frequent guest on our air. His family has a rich history in Italy; Ludovico's grandfather was the first elected President of Italy in the years following WWII after the fall of Mussolini.
Einaudi is quarantining with his wife in a tiny Swiss Alps town called Samedan, a few hours from where he lives in northern Italy.
KCRW: Los Angeles - Chris Douridas recently caught up with him, and below are highlights from our conversation and a couple of his piano pieces that he feels might resonate at this time. They were influenced by his adventures in Mali, where time moves at a different pace. Photo by Larry Hirshowitz.

Ludovico Einaudi turns daily walk, into 7-part musical journey / New Classical Tracks
Posted At : April 12, 2020 12:00 AM
"I think it's Cezanne that was painting the same mountain for 20 years, and every time he was painting the mountain there was a different light. It's beautiful to watch the different versions of the same view." Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi offers his own spin on a set of variations with an ambitious project representing each day of the week. It's called Seven Days Walking.
Ludovico grew up in Turin, Italy. He remembers vividly soaking up the music that his mother would play at the piano. "At a certain point I remember I started to listen to this piano that was around me all the time, like a fireplace. I remember I was connecting with my emotions through the sound of the piano and my mother. When I was younger, I was studying classical music at the same time I was exposed to the music of the '60s and '70s. I remember my mother was playing classical music, but at the same time she introduced me to "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. I also grew up with my older sister listening to Bob Dylan and The Beatles."

Ludovici Einaudi - Seven Days Walking - Decca
Ludovici Einaudi is perhaps best known as a soundtrack composer, having scored numerous Italian films and contributed music to the soundtracks of popular movies like Black Swan and I'm Still Here. But he has also written quite a bit of concert music, and this massive project was inspired by his daily walks in the Italian Alps. Over the course of 2019 he released seven individual albums, each containing quiet and contemplative music for piano, cello, and violin; now all seven are available in a single box set. Working my way through all of these recordings, I noticed something interesting: there would be moments when I'd think "I don't know, I think this music is a bit too simple to be interesting"–and then something would happen musically that would catch and hold my attention. It was usually something subtle: a gentle harmonic mutation, or a quiet but sudden divergence from a well-established ostinato. But then I'd find that I was listening with new appreciation. Libraries that collect in contemporary music or in pop-classical crossover should definitely give this set strong consideration.

Ludovico Einaudi brings Seattle to their feet, clapping and shouting 'bravo' / glide MAGAZINE
Posted At : June 20, 2019 12:00 AM
Many live shows are good but largely forgettable, enjoyable in the moment but mostly not so much as to provide fodder for engagement beyond brief temporal pleasure. Some experiences go much deeper and are worth trying to explain such that the reader might engage, live, and feel it vicariously. The latter was the case with Ludovico Einaudi's recent stop in Seattle at the gorgeous, and acoustically enviable, McCaw Hall on June 18th. There, the Italian artist – descended from Italian political royalty (truth: his paternal grandfather, Luigi Einaudi, was the President of Italy from 1948 to 1955) – brought normally staid Seattleites to their feet clapping, exclaiming that they couldn't believe how amazing he'd been, shouting "bravo," and generally carrying on.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Ludovico Einaudi hold 2 top spots on CLASSIC fM chart
Posted At : July 29, 2018 12:00 AM
The cellist and composer-pianist reign supreme in the Classic FM Chart, as they hold the No. 1 and No. 2 positions for the fourth consecutive week. Today (29 July) marks Sheku's tenth week at No. 1, as his debut album Inspiration continues to fly off the proverbial shelves. La Serenissima's recording of Vivaldi's Double Concertos for Oboes with Adrian Chandler has entered the chart at No. 3, just behind Kanneh-Mason and Einaudi. The rest of the top 10 stays fairly static, with the soundtracks to Incredibles 2 and The Little Mermaid up one place each at No. 4 and 5. The second and only other new entry in the chart is Takacs Quartet's recording of Beethoven's Late String Quartets, which has landed at No. 16. Meanwhile, music from the Royal Wedding proves as popular as ever, with the official 2018 album still in the chart at No. 20 – 10 weeks after the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Ludovico Einaudi, the most-streamed classical artist on Spotify, is set for the Dubai Opera / The National
Posted At : February 7, 2018 12:00 AM
There are not too many artists who can claim a classical celebrity fan base as eclectic as Chinese superstar pianist Lang Lang, but Milanese pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi has achieved such widespread appeal because his work cannot be easily classified within classical music. His work exudes a mysterious alchemy that keeps it far removed from beige muzak to encompass something darker, haunting and deeply emotional. If you are in the audience at Dubai Opera, where the 62-year-old plays on Thursday and Friday, don't be surprised to hear quiet sniffles among the crowd when the lamenting notes of Le Onde are played.

Ludovico Einaudi releases Stanze on Universal Classics
Posted At : October 23, 2014 12:00 AM
"The seemingly simple but strangely affecting music of Ludovico Einaudi defies pigeonholing…expect to feel transported and mesmerized by (his) artfully wrought compositions." - Daily Telegraph
Stanze (rooms) is a cycle of 16 pieces, and each is a musical space separated from the others like the rooms of a house. It's the diary of a journey, with the aim to achieve the maximum expression using the least possible.
This is how award-winning composer Ludovico Einaudi describes Stanze, his first cycle of ballads for solo instrument originally composed for piano over the course of three years. After having listened to the performance of some songs performed on electric harp by Cecilia Chailly (the sister of conductor Riccardo Chailly), Einaudi decided to entrust the playing of the whole project to her, privileging her instrument for the entire album.
These are interwoven pieces with great charm & without any dull moments; so light and rich to compensate the absence of any other instrument. Stanze creates an embraceable and warm atmosphere overflowing with a deep emotional power, as hypnotic as any perfume. Each piece is paradoxically independent from and essential to the others, due to an extremely focused and creative performance style.
Einaudi is one of the most synched artists in the world, and had two entries in the Top 20 synchs of 2012. He has had campaigns in Italy with American Airlines (spot starring Kevin Spacey), Sony, Vodafone, Chivas Regal, Santander, P&G, British Airways, and many film trailers, including the Academy Award-winning film, "The Black Swan."
