Yo-Yo Ma brings his phenomenal global project featuring the composer's cello suites to India along with spoken word, music recitals and theatre. The celebrated international cellist, is in Mumbai this week for yet another stop over of The Bach Project, a concert series in which he performs Johann Sebastian Bach's unaccompanied cello suites in a single sitting, in what will ultimately be 36 locations around the world. It is a journey that began, rather auspiciously in August last year, at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado, where nearly 9,000 people gathered to share the musical experience. The solos seemed to coalesce into a stunning musical narrative (performed as a marathon, without intermission) and Ma has spoken of how the concert reflects a shared humanity and the communion between nature and humankind.

At a time when most of the world's jazz capitals are buried under snow or suffering through sub-zero temperatures, Haiti is offering fans a week of outdoor concerts showcasing the best talents in the business in a balmy Caribbean clime, the 13th edition of the Port-au-Prince Jazz Festival, running now through January 26.
Now in its thirteenth year, PaPJazz, as the Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince styles itself, is aiming high. Proving that 13 isn't always an unlucky number, the festival this year has secured for the first time the talents of Cecile McLorin Salvant, currently one of the biggest singers in the world of jazz. "I feel so blessed to be in this shithole country," American trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard said at the end of his set, reprising with irony an expression reportedly used by US President Donald Trump to describe Haiti and a number of African countries.

It's a Thursday night at New York City's legendary Rose Bar inside the Gramercy Park Hotel, and seconds after Brian Newman dashes out of "Showboat," his 1971 Oldsmobile 98 LS (the vehicular inspiration behind his debut Verve Records album of the same name), he flies to the bar and greets me with Dean Martin-like charisma and words reminiscent of yesteryear: "Hey, baby, what's going on?" Brian Newman is the bandleader of Gaga's Vegas residency-and one of her closest friends.

Mobile Chamber Music Society has brought some talented and lauded musicians to Mobile over the decades, but a note from one of their key members hints at a high-water mark this month. "We have never had the prestigious Miró Quartet on our series before because, frankly, we could never afford them," Daniel Silver wrote. " The quartet's members are instructors at the University of Texas' Butler School of Music. Within the first five years of its 1995 founding, the quartet had won first prizes in every competition it entered and was the first ensemble to win the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Their tour circuit normally takes them through North America, Asia and Europe and to numerous esteemed festivals. They have collaborated with Joshua Bell, Midori, Eliot Fisk, Pinchas Zukerman and Jon Kimura Parker among others.
Their Sunday, Jan. 20, Laidlaw Performing Arts Center(University of South Alabama) concert includes Schubert's Quartettsatz in C Minor, Dvořák's "Cypresses," Wolf's "Italian Serenade," Puccini's "I Crisantemi," Michael Ippolito's "Big Sky, Low Horizon" and Beethoven's Quartet in F Minor and Grosse Fuge.

Radio New Zealand's Sound Lounge brings you a lullaby of epic proportions - Max Richter's Sleep at10:00 pm on 19 January 2019. It's the German-born British composer's "personal lullaby for a frenetic world" scored for piano, strings, electronics and vocals without words. The public premiere in Berlin was held at former East German Powerplant 'Kraftwerk' and since then Sleep has been heard by slumbering audiences all over the world, including the 2018 Auckland Arts Festival.
Max Richter has loved sleeping since he was a child and to create this experience he consulted a neuroscientist to learn more about the human brain functions while sleeping. "For me," he says, "Sleep is an attempt to see how that space when your conscious mind is on holiday, can be a place for music to live." Richter performs on a range of keyboard instruments throughout the work. He plays piano, organ, synthesisers and electronics. He's also joined by the musicians of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and the lilting soprano voice of Grace Davidson.

Classical radio says; Leif Ove Andsnes - Chopin Ballades & Nocturnes is a must-hear recording / ClassicalMPR: Major Themes

Welcome to Major Themes, a monthly feature in which classical music experts recommend a must-hear recording based on what's happening at classical stations and programs around the country. This month, we checked in with friends in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and California, as well as American Public Media. Here are their top picks.
There are many recordings of Chopin on the market. That said, I'm glad that Leif Ove Andsnes has taken the time to create this album and that it's now something that we can share with our audiences. The music sounds dreamlike in his capable hands, and my overall listening experience became all the more satisfying when I learned that Andsnes struggled in a sense to find this intimate place in his relationship with the pianists' pianist. Unsurprisingly, it will pair well with your favorite bottle of red. - Brad Althoff, managing producer of national classical programs, American Public Media, St. Paul, Minn.
This fall, Sony Classical looks forward to releasing Chopin: Ballades & Nocturnes for solo piano by Leif Ove Andsnes, "a pianist of magisterial elegance, power and insight" (New York Times). Interspersing the Romantic master composer's four Ballades – works immense in the range and power of their expression – with three of his nocturnes, the new album represents the Norwegian pianist's first recording of Chopin's music in more than a decade.
Leif Ove Andsnes will follow his string of award-winning Beethoven concerto recordings for Sony Classical with an album of solo piano works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Sibelius wrote over 150 works for piano, but the composer's works for the instrument have long languished in the shadow of his orchestral music. His piano pieces were often seen as lacking in the rich, sonorous textures that the composer brought to his full orchestral works and were therefore largely disregarded. Andsnes has scoured the composer's entire piano output, carefully selecting the pieces he believes deserve recognition and with which he feels a strong personal connection, uncovering ‘intriguing works with the wonderful Sibelius qualities we know'.
