Julia Lezhneva's Graun is Forbes: Classical CD Of The Week

Julia Lezhneva, the little soprano whirlwind whom Marc Minkowski discovered on YouTube some years ago, has a new solo CD out on Decca – and it's a corker. That's partly because of the racing, punchy playing of Concerto Köln (with Dmitry Sinkovsky as concertmaster!), certainly because of Lezhneva and her instrument which is so well suited to baroque bravura arias, but especially so because of Lezhneva's choice of repertoire.

"Julia Lezhneva discovers Graun" is the title of the wonderful, to-the-point liner notes by George Loomis. And along with her, most of us. Graun? "Carl Graun. Carl Heinrich Graun!" as he would introduce himself over a brandy rum punch at parties of Frederick the Great's, since Graun was, after all, in his Majesty's musical service.
