Keyboard master John Medeski thrives on the unpredictable, a trait that has kept his work with the trailblazing trio Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW) fresh and surprising for more than twenty years. With A Different Time, his first solo piano project, Medeski once again takes his sound in a completely unexpected direction - unexpected even to him. "I had a more eclectic record in mind," Medeski says. "I wanted to put out something that would be more representative of what my live solo concerts are like." The first release on Sony Classical's newly-revived OKeh Records imprint, A Different Time is a far more introspective, meditative collection than fans of MMW's lively, groove-driven music might expect. Consisting mostly of Medeski's own compositions and improvisations, with a familiar spiritual and a Willie Nelson song added into the mix, the album presents a different side of Medeski's prodigious artistry, one which he was initially reluctant to display.

91.5 KIOS 'Last Call: CD of the Month' is DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski, Scofield - Hudson
A remarkable recording of solid grooves, Hudson is a remarkable debut from a band that comes together as if they have performed as a unit for years. The highlight on this recording is clearly "A Hard Rain Is A Gonna Fall". The Bob Dylan classic is given a very soulful treatment with deep musical colors. Slowly, the listener notices that the tune has metamorphosized somehow into a whirlwind of organ a...

DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski, Scofield - Hudson / NPR: First Listen
There's a memorable stretch in Hudson, the debut album by a new jazz supergroup of the same name, when a megaton of subtext finds expression in purely musical terms. It happens in the second half of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," a cover of the apocalyptic Bob Dylan song. Up to that point, the band - drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist John Scofield, keyboardist John Medeski and bassist Larry Grena...
