Diana Krall, as elegant and sophisticated as ever on 'This Dream of You' / Qobuz
Posted At : September 29, 2020 12:00 AM
On the 13th of March 2017, Tommy LiPuma died at the age of 80. The Grammy-adorned producer had, one year prior, began work on a new album for his protege Diana Krall. The Canadian singer was therefore left to mix the record entirely alone...
The calibre of musician on this record is impressive: guitarists Russell Malone and Anthony Wilson, bassists John Clayton and Christian McBride, drummer Karriem Riggins and Bob Dylan's bassist, Tony Garnier, all come along to finish off the recording of This Dream of You. A great fan of Dylan, Krall used a song name from his 2009 album Together Through Life as the title of this 15th album released by Verve. Whether in duet, trio or quartet, Madame Costello plays and sings in diverse contexts but ultimately returns to her preferred repertoire: the Great American Songbook. The standards that have come to be expected a thousand times over are met as if by magic. Autumn in New York by Vernon Duke, How Deep is the Ocean by Irving Berlin and the unmistakeable Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelley as well as other classics from giants like Sinatra and Nat King Cole become her own.
A whisper, a murmur, a refined arrangement, an instrumental treasure, Diana Krall prevails time after time.
One could fault her for not daring to re-imagine the songs more, but when the standard of these renditions is so high and of such depth, we can do nothing but yield and wonder. Also note that for the first time, Diana Krall's face doesn't appear on the album cover!

Diana Krall showcases her excellent vocals and piano on 'This Dream of You' / The Pine Belt NEWS
Posted At : September 16, 2020 12:00 AM
In 1993, her self-released debut caught the ear of industry veteran Tommy LiPuma, a veteran producer who made Barbra Streisand a chart success beginning in the Seventies and turned George Benson into Top 10 hit, cementing the connection between Soul music and Jazz. LiPuma was Krall's main collaborator, producing her albums until 2009. Every step Krall took, LiPuma was there to steer the ship, whether it was standards or bossa nova. LiPuma passed away in 2017. Krall revived these sessions she did with him from 2016-2017 where she showcases her excellent vocals and piano on tracks that swing ("I Wished on The Moon"). "Dream" is poignant, and Krall at her most intimate in years.

Renowned jazz vocalist and pianist Diana Krall shared a lively take on the standard "I Wished on the Moon." Recorded in just one take by Krall and longtime bassist John Clayton, the song marks the second single off the artist's forthcoming album, This Dream of You, out September 25 via Verve.
"I Wished on the Moon" was originally made famous by Bing Crosby, who recorded the song with The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra for the 1935 film, The Big Broadcast of 1936. Released as a single, the track hovered at No.2 for seven weeks, while Crosby would later revisit the song in 1954. The standard has also been covered by such hallowed artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett.

88.3WBGO: Take Five features new music by Diana Krall
Posted At : August 25, 2020 12:00 AM
The last time we hailed a new album by Diana Krall, she was traveling in tandem - with her dear friend Tony Bennett, for a program of Gershwin tunes. Krall's next release will be a solo endeavor, but one with a phantom collaborator close at hand. This Dream of You, which Verve will release on Sept. 25, features material she had been working on with producer Tommy LiPuma, before he died in 2017.
The first single from the album is a calmly smoldering take on Irvin Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean," featuring Krall on piano, Marc Ribot on guitar, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Tony Garnier on bass and Karriem Riggins on drums. The same crew plays on the album's title track, a recent-vintage Bob Dylan tune; elsewhere Krall enlists a handful of other regular collaborators, like bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist Anthony Wilson.
Diana Krall's This Dream of You will be released on Sept. 25

Diana Krall plays the close reader on 'Amelia' and 'For the Roses' at Joni Mitchell's '75Birthday Celebration' / WBGO: Take Five
Posted At : March 10, 2019 12:00 AM
Last November, a starry array of musicians gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate the 75th birthday of Joni Mitchell, whose legacy as a singer-songwriter defies any constrictive label you might apply to it. Decca has now documented that evening with an album, Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration, featuring Chaka Khan, Los Lobos, Emmylou Harris and others. The musical directors for the evening were a pair of jazz musicians, pianist Jon Cowherd and drummer Brian Blade. And one of the marquee artists was Diana Krall, singing "Amelia," from the 1976 album Hejira.
Ann Powers attended the concert and wrote a brilliant essay for NPR Music. Her words perfectly capture the intimacy and subtly involution of this performance: "Krall, for whom Mitchell's music was a bridge from straight jazz to the more eclectic music that made her famous, played the close reader on ‘Amelia' and ‘For the Roses,' her interactions with bassist Christopher Thomas suggesting thorny conversations she's had with herself about these songs for years."

Diana Krall's album "Turn up the Quiet" has renditions of American jazz classic numbers such as "Night and Day" where her voice is sometimes barely above a whisper. But the measured restraint and reflectiveness is also accompanied by an undoubted sultriness. The multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist and singer returns to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts as part of her "Turn Up The Quiet" world tour. Krall also recently teamed up with Tony Bennett for "Love Is Here To Stay."

According to a recent study, sharks take the bait on jazz / West Elgin Chronicle

WHO? WHAT? WOW! The week in weird. JAZZ CAN SOOTHE THE SAVAGE-TOOTHED BEAST
If you're a shark, chances are Diana Krall and John Coltrane are among your favourite jams. According to a study conducted by Australia's Macquarie University Fish Lab, sharks are seemingly drawn to jazz music. As part of the study, university scientists trained Port Jackson sharks to swim from one end of a holding tank to another for a treat whenever soothing jazz sounds blared from underwater speakers. Five of the underwater creatures learned to associate the music with food.
When the same test was conducted with classical music, however, the sharks didn't take the bait. For the scientists, the study was one step closer to understanding a shark's cognitive abilities and personality traits. photo: (Getty Images)

Bravo Diana Krall@Place Des Arts: Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier / The Quebec Telegram

To forget the little fresh wind and the approaching winter, the recipe of Diana Krall is the equivalent of several infusions. North American tour for his latest album Turn Up The Quiet, and again this evening to 20 h, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, she returned to her first love. After Glad Rag Doll, which was a homage to the cabarets of the 20's, its novelty while sweetness is firmly in the tradition of Nat King Cole and Oscar Peterson. Generous, smiling, and obviously pleased to be back in this city where she fit in her arms, the evening took place under the sign of tenderness. In a perfect osmosis with the musicians, the repertoire is classical in its form was a condensed version of the " Great American Songbook ".

Diana Krall - Symphony Hall show makes '10 best in Phoenix this week' list / Phoenix New Times
Posted At : August 8, 2017 12:00 AM
Diana Krall is a jazz legend. And two decades into her career recording sultry and popular jazz records, she's still changing things up. On her latest album, Krall has shifted her focus to a new topic: grief. Turn Up the Quiet, the artist's 14th album, features jazz standards that pay homage to her longtime producer, Tommy LiPuma, who died unexpectedly in March. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Krall says the album embodies all of the values LiPuma instilled in her. "He took such joy in life," she says. "He had a tremendous sense of humor, and he taught me the importance of taking time to be with my family." Even though Krall acknowledges the album deals with darker topics, she says it's more about enduring and focusing on the future than dwelling on the past. And that's just what Krall is doing both musically and personally. "It's about finding romance in everything, in beauty or in things that are sad," Krall says. Diana Krall plays Symphony Hall this Wednesday, August 9.

Diana Krall leans into the Chateau Ste. Michelle evening with relaxed abandon / Seattle Times review
Posted At : July 31, 2017 12:00 AM
Riding the success of her No. 1 jazz album, "Turn Up the Quiet" released by Verve Records in May, masterful Canadian singer-pianist Diana Krall delivered a magical, expressive concert Friday at Chateau Ste. Michelle to a sold-out crowd on the winery lawn.
Seated at the piano, wearing a floor-length black print dress, Krall ranged through a sample of songs from the romantic new album, as well as other tunes in a delightful variety of moods, a program Krall described as an "emotional weather report." Though she hit a few scratchy notes at the start (thanks to the onset of a mild cold), by the time Krall and her crackerjack band got to their playful rendition of "Blue Skies" – which included an interpolation of Thelonious Monk's be-bop take on the tune, "In Walked Bud" – she leaned into the evening with relaxed abandon. "I'm having a tremendous time," she said, then launched into a jaunty "On the Sunny Side of the Street."

Diana Krall DOES turn up the quiet / ginalovesjazz review
Posted At : July 5, 2017 12:00 AM
There are a lot of positive and good things to say about Diana Krall‘s new album "Turn Up The Quiet". First and foremost, the title says it all: she DOES turn up the quiet, with ample help from legendary engineer Al Schmitt and equally legendary producer, the late Tommy LiPuma. Diana's voice is recorded with the utter most intimacy, right in your face with each breath audible as if she is directly in front of you. Sometimes it is more like a slight little breeze that turns out to be her singing, like on "Isn't It Romantic". Stefon Harris graces the tune with his vibes and the phat orchestration is once again from the brain of the king of orchestrators, Alan Broadbent. And the band! Christian McBride‘s thick and robust bass opens "Like Someone In Love" before Russell Malone sets in with his striding guitar.

Diana Krall set for Benedum, Downtown / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Posted At : June 22, 2017 12:00 AM
If you want to feel good, Diana Krall says, go to the Benedum, Downtown, on Tuesday night. "It's a very uplifting, feel-good [show]," she says, focusing on the Great American Songbook. The pianist-vocalist is in the midst of a tour supporting a new CD, "Turn Up the Quiet," that's "more of a jazz record," than she's done lately. It was produced by Tommy LiPuma, who died in March. During Jazz Appreciation Month in April, she mentioned on Sirius XM Radio that she was thrilled to hear Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. Today, she says, "I think everyone who is a jazz musician is, and would be, inspired by them." As for coming here, "Pittsburgh audiences are traditionally amazing for me," she says. "It's one of my favorite places to come to."

The most high-profile female jazz artist of her generation - Diana Krall set for the Beacon Theater / New York Times
Posted At : June 20, 2017 12:00 AM
The Diana Krall of today isn't hiding in any corners. Now 52, she is easily the most high-profile female jazz artist of her generation, with a string of gold and platinum albums as well as film and TV projects, including an upcoming Amazon series adapting the children's book series "Pete the Cat." (Ms. Krall and her husband, Elvis Costello, voice Pete's parents.) Ms. Krall is now eager to engage that veteran stature by mentoring younger musicians the way Rosemary Clooney, Marian McPartland and others encouraged her. And on Wednesday June 21 she will perform at the Beacon Theater, supporting her latest album, "Turn Up the Quiet," a collection of standards released in May that was firmly guided by her artistic authority. "If she had an idea for something, and it felt definite, she would let us know," said the drummer Jeff Hamilton, a frequent collaborator who played on the record, "whereas in the past she might have said, ‘Is this O.K. with you guys?'"

Diana Krall's Turn Up the World tour kicks off in Minneapolis / Twin Cities Arts Reader
Posted At : June 5, 2017 12:00 AM
Diana Krall's Turn Up the World tour kicked off in Minneapolis on Friday with a concert at the State Theatre. The concert featured Krall's trademark husky alto vocals in standards drawn from the jazz repertoire and the Great American Songbook. The tour shares a name with Krall's just-released album, which parts ways with the pop direction of her last album, Wallflower (2015), to return to her vocal roots. It's a welcome turn for many fans, and the evening certainly hit many sweet spots. It's been eight years since Krall's last standards album, although she's been teasing fans for years with performances of standards on late night talk shows. While Wallflower and its tour were not without their charms, there was much more vocal shine on Friday.

Diana Krall set for Madison's Overture Center / Wisconsin Gazette
Posted At : June 2, 2017 12:00 AM
As someone who improvises both in music and in life, jazz pianist Diana Krall considers herself a lucky person. Such luck - and considerable talent - have powered the Canadian chanteuse's stellar career as one of the world's leading jazz performers. "I am not much of a planner," Krall, 52, admits during a telephone interview from her home on Vancouver Island. "I just surround myself with players who are the best at what they do, and I am lucky because I get to do all kinds of things." Those "things" include both jazz standards and treatments of pop numbers she frequently performs, and her latest album Turn Up the Quiet, released May 5, features a cross section of them.
Krall launches a massive two-and-one-half-year tour June 2 in Minneapolis. It boasts 79 North American and European dates in 2017 alone. Krall and her combo will be making stops June 3 at Madison's Overture Center for the Arts and June 4 at Milwaukee's Riverside Theater. READ THE FULL Wisconsin Gazette ARTICLE

Hear Diana Krall's exclusive WBGO: Singers Unlimited session
Posted At : June 2, 2017 12:00 AM
Early in her musical career, in the ‘90s, Diana Krall played a regular gig on Saturday evenings in Boston. When she drove down to New York City on Sunday mornings, she'd plan the trip so she could get close enough to hear the FM signal of WBGO in time to hear Singers Unlimited. She's been hearing herself playing piano and singing ever since on WBGO.
Nowadays, she can listen to wbgo.org during her travels around the world or in her hometown, Nanaimo, British Columbia. "I listen to you all the time," she said when she came in for a recent session with a killer band, featuring frequent quartet-mate Anthony Wilson on guitar, along with bassist Robert Hurst, drummer Karriem Riggins and violinist Stuart Duncan. They played songs from Diana's new release, Turn Up The Quiet, which is a virtual comeback to straight-ahead jazz after the contemporary pop foray of her previous album, Wallflower.

Diana Krall set for NJPAC / Asbury Park Press
Posted At : June 1, 2017 12:00 AM
Modern jazz siren Diana Krall commands a catalog of classics from across the body of work known as the Great American Songbook; many of these numbers go back generations and have been performed countless times over the years. But when she plays, Krall only has her mind on one thing: the here and now. After all, when it comes to jazz, "It's happening in the moment and it will never happen like that again the same way," Krall said.
Take the bewitching rendition of the standard "Moonglow" found on "Turn Up the Quiet," Krall's May 5 release on Verve Records. Leading an ensemble that includes guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Tony Garnier, drummer Karriem Riggins and fiddle player Stuart Duncan, Krall weaves something that feels at once timeless and immediately intimate.
"Jazz is modern because it's still this creative place that we go to spontaneously," Krall said. "It's not just worked out. And especially when you work with those guys, you just have a concept and you know that what they're going to bring to it when you just reference things simply and quietly … is much bigger than me writing out a detailed memo. It's just all about the feel of everything."
Krall will support "Turn Up the Quiet" with a world tour kicking off in North America on Friday, June 2 at the State Theater in Minneapolis. She'll be at Prudential Hall at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on June 16.

Diana Krall - Turn Up the Quiet reaches #1 at JazzWeek
Posted At : May 25, 2017 12:00 AM
Diana Krall's 'Turn Up the Quiet,' released on Verve Records, finds the multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning jazz pianist and singer most determinedly the bandleader. She has chosen the repertoire, conceived the ensemble arrangements and gathered three distinct bands for these sessions. "Turn Up The Quiet" is a co-production with Tommy LiPuma, producer of many of Krall's most acclaimed albums, including, "All For You", "The Look Of Love" and "Live In Paris". The record was once again peerlessly engineered and mixed by Al Schmitt at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California. "Turn Up The Quiet" begins with the trio of Diana, bassist, Christian McBride and guitarist, Russell Malone, who take a marvelous ride through "Blue Skies". This line-up returns near the close of the record to be at the very heart of Johnny Mercer's "Dream" which is also graced by one of the album's most beautifully chosen orchestrations by Alan Broadbent.

T&CQ&A with Diana Krall
Posted At : May 12, 2017 12:00 AM
You might know a number of the songs on Diana Krall's new album, Turn Up The Quiet, out May 5, but you've never heard them like this before. For her 13th studio album, singer, pianist, and bandleader Krall-a five-time Grammy winner-has reimagined 11 songs of jazz and American classics to create an upbeat, atmospheric, and utterly charming collection.
"This album represents a time in my life when I'm most comfortable with who I am and what I'm doing," Krall tells Town & Country of the record, which she produced alongside her longtime collaborator, the late Tommy LiPuma. One of the album's standout tracks, "Moonglow," dates back to 1933, but in Krall's hands feels entirely contemporary. "We didn't want to revisit a theme we've already done, so I assembled three different ensembles and we went into the studio with about 50 songs," she says. "I brought about 25 more songs than I'll be able to finish, and it turned out to be more upbeat than I originally envisioned-but that's not a bad thing."

Diana Krall returns to the small group + orchestra sound she does so well / Texas Public Radio
Posted At : May 10, 2017 12:00 AM
After detours into snoozing '70s soft rock, 1920s jazz, and bossa nova on her last three albums respectively, Diana Krall returns to the small group + orchestra sound she does so well for her best studio album of standards since 1999's "When I Look In Your Eyes." This new release, "Turn Up The Quiet," finds Krall collaborating with many of her previous partners, including guitarist Russell Malone, and the rhythm section of John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums. Alan Broadbent provides the tasteful orchestrations on several of the tunes.

Krall sounds most at home in the great American songbook, and you'll find plenty of gems here by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, and Johnny Mercer. But there are some real surprises and discoveries as well, such as Krall's hypnotic take on "Sway," by Norman Gimbel, Pablo Rodriguez and Luís Molina. With its unhurried pace, it's the longest cut on the album, and maybe the longest cut on any of Krall's previous albums. It doesn't feel like it, though, as the orchestra lulls the listener into a state of sun-drenched bliss. READ THE FULL Texas Public Radio REVIEW

Diana Krall - Turn Up The Quiet is a work of art / Jazz Weekly
Posted At : May 9, 2017 12:00 AM
In what may have been Tommy LiPuma's last production, Diana Krall's latest album is a frame-able work of art. She sticks to her strengths here, emphasizing her incredibly strong and seductive voice on this album that alternates between cozy small group sets and rich orchestral ensembles. Of the former, long time buddies Christian McBride-John Clayton/b, Russell Malone-Anthony Wilson/g make for intimate swing as McBride provides a rich pulse for Krall's cooing on "Like Someone In Love," ringer Marc Ribot strums delightfully on "Moonglow" and Stuart Duncan fiddles about on a playful "I'll See You In My Dreams." Conducted and arranged by the venerable Alan Broadbent, the string pieces have Krall seductive on "Night and Day" while being soft and tender with Wilson's guitar on "Isn't It Romantic" as well as rich and breathy during a nocturnal "Dream."

Diana Krall - Turn Up the Quiet / Elmore Magazine review
Posted At : May 5, 2017 12:00 AM
Multi-Grammy Award winner Diana Krall doesn't need to prove a thing at this point in her career. She's returned to the style that made her popular to begin with, having experimented with the singer-songwriter style in partnership with her husband, Elvis Costello. She's paid homage to her father's extensive 78 record collection on two albums now. She's even done a bossa nova record. But her career was built on interpretations of the great American songbook to which she returns here. This is the music she loves and listening to just a few notes will be all you need to convince you of that. As Krall says, "I have thought about these songs for a long time. Being in the company of some of my greatest friends in music allowed me to tell these stories just as I'd intended. Sometimes you just have to turn up the quiet to be heard a little better."
